The Google + Identity Dump; How to Connect? WARNING; There's a problem with your Google+ profile - DrDon YatesSrPhD. What is the problem, well according to Google +, my established Identity does not conform to their name rules! To quote “Google+ makes connecting with people on the web more like connecting with people in the real world. Because of this, it's important to use your common name so that the people you want to connect with can find you.”
Certainly we can agree that Google is by far the biggest name and business directory in the world. As such, what is the problem with being specific?
Business
Finding and Connecting with a business by its name online is easy because they have a fairly unique identity and are often trademarked.
Even then, a search for McDonald (no ‘s’) online produces 227,000,000 results; whereas MacDonalds give us 168,000,000. Zeroing in further ie. MacDonalds -Los Angeles gives us 51,100,000, but MacDonald's Los Angeles Disneyland reduces your results to 9,090,000. Obviously, the more specific your search, the easier it is to find what you are looking for!
How about you?
Google + and Facebook, both Use your common first and last name.
By using your common name, you'll be able to connect with people you know and help them find you. Indications of membership in professional, educational, societal or religious entities, such as "Dr", "Rev" or "Professor" are not allowed in the first or last name fields.
Violation examples: Doctor Stan Livingston, Bill Smithwick MSc, Rev Jim Copley, S. P.
According to Google +, most people use their legal name, or some variant of it, in the real world. We recognise that this isn't always the case, and allow for other common names in Google+. Your common name is the name that your friends, family or colleagues usually call you. For example, if your legal name is Charles Jones Jr. but you normally use Chuck Jones or Junior Jones, either of these would be acceptable.
So Google + wants people we know to be able to find and connect with us. In the real world, to use Googles + terms, we are known to our friends and family by one or two common names. However others know us and communicate with us as Doctor Stan Livingston, Bill Smithwick MSc, Rev Jim Copley, S. P. Jim Copley
Forget about using our war hero’s rank, General, Master Sargent and such, forget about banding yourself, forget about your true, real world identity.
Using their example; let us search and try to connect with:
- Doctor Stan Livingston, we get About 11,000,000 results, which one is the one we are looking for, perhaps it is the first one on the list. About 4,700,000 results
- Bill Smithwick MSc, we get 98,900 including the reference to the Google +name policy, Bill Smithwick About 349,000 results
- Rev Jim Copley, S. P, we get 130,000 and the top ranked site are related to Google + policy, Jim Copley, About 2,150,000 results
- But when we added the middle name Larry or Charles Larry Jones Jr, results were 71,600,000. Without the Jr, results were 14,900,000. Chuck Jones 49,900,000 or Junior Jones 194,000,000
- To weed these out and narrow our search, we need a school or a location. Charles L Jones Jr – New York produced results of 3,870,000, better, but still a big sample. How about Dr Charles L Jones Jr – no help, results 9,680,000, but Rev Dr Charles L Jones Jr reduced our search to 2,610,000
- Still too much to work with, let us try Rev Dr Charles L Jones Jr – Baptist Church and our odds of connecting are much better with only 1,010,000 results.
But how about a search for our former military friends; these friends can come from anywhere in the country, and all we may only know them by Name.
I have tried, but never located my friend by name including his Initial.
- If he had identified himself by name and rank or former rank, I would have better odds finding and connecting with each other.
- If his Google + or Facebook profile had shown his prior military service, we have a better chance.
Again, is it easy to see that Google is by far the biggest name and business directory in the world, so what is the problem with being specific? Because it doesn’t conform to their name rules! What is wrong with their rules?
