Human Resources Career

Hiring and firing employees, creating benefits programs, managing employee communications, training and compensating workers – these are just a few of the tasks you could be in charge of with a human resources career. As employees become considered more and more of a competitive advantage in the world of business, the human resources industry has grown in strategic significance. It is a highly competitive industry, but if you have always dreamed of a human resources career, there are a number of steps you can take to get ahead.

First of all, the smaller the company that you work for, the more hats you will have to wear on a daily basis. So, be sure to never take on more responsibilities than you can handle. Keeping that in mind, however, remember that volunteering to do additional tasks will usually only add to your value within the company. It also shows your interest and eagerness to get ahead.

Second of all, one of the most important characteristics you will need to possess to succeed in this industry are strong interpersonal skills. Take a look at your title – human resources specialist. If you haven’t mastered the ‘human’ part of it, you can forget about getting very far. You will need to be able to develop strong working relationships with everyone from the senior management to the junior workers. After all, you more than anyone else within the company will be interacting with people at every rank.

A human resources career is a challenging one. To get that extra edge, I suggest you find yourself a mentor. Developing a mentor relationship, either within or external to the company you work for has been shown to help people move ahead faster. From their experience to their guidance to their contacts, mentors can help show you the road to success.

Following from that, it is important to always keep learning. I know some CEOs who manage to read one book each and every day. That’s 30 books every month! While we can’t all share that dedication, nor can we spare that amount of time, the lesson is an important one: continually acquiring new knowledge is a tried and true strategy to get ahead in any line of work.

Another useful technique is to think of everyone everywhere as a potential client. That means use every opportunity you can to network and build strong links yourself and other professionals. One way to do this is to join an industry organization, or attend industry conferences. And, remember, it’s not just about what people can do for you. If your networking is going to be fruitful, you need to think about what you can do for others.

The very bottom line of a human resources career is that you need to connect with people. If you cannot do that, it doesn’t matter how many books you read, or how many conferences you attend. People need to want to do business with you before they will care about your credentials.

Information and templates for hiring the right people, training, retention ( always an interesting an useful topic), conducting performance appraisals, information on discipline and documentation, conflict resolution, exit interview information, etc. This would be really useful because most small companies don't have set HR guidelines/policies. Thanks!

[Suggestion] Human Resources Forum - Thoughts? [Suggestion] Human Resources Forum - Thoughts? - I just noticed about 5 minutes ago that there is no forum for Human Resources discussion. It may not be a large part of startups that are sole proprietorships, or even partnerships, as most groups starting up a company know each other, their respective roles, and the company really well. But as companies expand and become more successful, HR becomes an increasingly large contributing factor to a Small Business' success.
