Human resources development is a tricky thing for any business. Making sure that you thoroughly understand the job market in which you are in, as well as the employee needs that your business requires in terms of things like skill levels, technical abilities, and flexibility, is a challenging task for any small business owner. Before you can carry out an in depth job analysis and better understand the labour environment in which you are working, there are some things you need to keep in mind.
First of all, you need to take a look at the simple demographics of the situation, especially any changing trends. What are the characteristics of the labour force, for instance in terms of age or gender, and what does that mean for your business? Also, how have those statistics changed over time? Is it a changing trend that could affect your company’s pension policy or insurance packages? These are all things to keep in mind.
Second of all, what is the diversity of the workforce? The increase of women in the labour market, as well as minorities, could have a strong impact on your business. For instance, the resultant increase of discrimination, wrongful dismissal and sexual and racial harassment cases in recent years is evidence of my point. If any business is going to be successful today, it must make sure it is on top of this changing trend. Here, making sure your protection policies are comprehensive is key. Also, cultural sensitivity training and the like for your staff could be another beneficial option.
A third factor of human resources development to consider is the skills and qualifications of the labour market today. Our society is moving away from manual labour industries and this will no doubt have an impact on your business. If you’re not finding enough people with the technical qualifications that working for your company requires, you might have to start thinking about things like offering increased financial rewards, or making your company more visible in the community.
Finally, a successful business owner not only understands how his or her own business must respond to these changing trends, but also how the individual responds to them. For instance, in this increasingly globalized world, what role does the geographical location of your company play? Generally speaking, factors such as salary and the transportation infrastructure will greatly affect a person’s willingness to travel longer distances to get to work. Also, are there generational differences in behaviour that might affect an employee’s performance or expectations from your company?
Whether you decide to do your hiring through a job centre, newspaper, or headhunting firm, it is important to acquire an in depth picture of the labour market before you begin in order that you exactly who you are looking for, who you are likely to get, and what that means for your company. Human resources development is crucial to the success of your company, and if done correctly, could make all the difference in the world.
