Human Resources Training

Article Overview: Starting a new job is never easy, but it is all the more difficult if your employer has not provided you with adequate human resources training. As a small business owner, you need to make sure that each and every single one of your new workers feels comfortable with both their new tasks and their new surroundings. Often times, we don’t like to put forward the money it costs to train employees. But, trust me, in the long run it will be worth it for your company. No matter how stellar someone’s qualifications may appear on paper, beginning without the proper training could lead them to crash and burn.

Human Resources Training

Starting a new job is never easy, but it is all the more difficult if your employer has not provided you with adequate human resources training.

First of all, I’d recommend always personally welcoming new employees to their new work environment. As your company grows, this might not be practically feasible. In such cases, I would delegate the task to another senior executive. Basically, the job should not be left up to the HR guys. You want to make your new employee feel like a valuable part of the team, and what better way than for the president or CEO to welcome them personally. Besides just greeting them, take them on a tour of the office and let them know where everything from the bathroom to the photocopy room is

Second of all, you need to make sure that your employees are all confident in their job descriptions. Do they know what they’re supposed to be doing? Or when they’re supposed to be doing it? Do they know who they report to and how often staff meetings are held? Make sure they understand the company, its history, how it operates, and their role within it. You might not like laying down the law as such, but in the end, employees will appreciate knowing what is expected of them.

A third important component of human resources training is to make sure your new employee understands the market in which you are operating. Who are your greatest competitors and how do you stand out from them? What products or services does your company offer that makes it different from the rest. Here, demonstrating products that the new staff member will need to understand could also be a big help.

Fourthly, you want to get into the more specific components of the job which all new employees are undoubtedly curious about. These include such things as hours, pay, pay schedule, holidays, sick leaves and so on. If there are important rules or procedures that your staff follow, then inform them of these as well.

Finally, in order to make your new employee feel completely comfortable in their new position, introduce them to their co-workers and each of their respective job responsibilities. You might also consider implementing a buddy system, whereby all new employees are paired up with a current employee who is able to show them the ropes, and who will be there for this person when you cannot.

Human resources training can be tricky, but it need not be overly expensive or difficult. Just make sure you think of it as an investment. The returns you get will be tenfold.

[Suggestion] Human Resources Forum - Thoughts? [Suggestion] Human Resources Forum - Thoughts? - I just noticed about 5 minutes ago that there is no forum for Human Resources discussion. It may not be a large part of startups that are sole proprietorships, or even partnerships, as most groups starting up a company know each other, their respective roles, and the company really well. But as companies expand and become more successful, HR becomes an increasingly large contributing factor to a Small Business' success.
