The capability to teach and learn has changed a great deal with the advent of the internet. The classroom has changed and employee training reflects that change with new capacities to teach staff important information and skills. Training staff can be done with ease and cost-effectiveness thanks to technology and the ability of students to adapt their learning styles to new systems.
Managers and human resources departments love the notion of e-learning, as it enables them to train large segments of staff at comparatively low cost and little time. Much of the learning is independent and classroom-led instruction does not need to be scheduled. On the other hand, many individual employees in various fields miss the personal touch of classroom learning and do not retain information as well under e-learning. Striking the cautious balance between e-learning and traditional instructional learning can be difficult.
Choose Wisely.
In order to choose the learning method that is acceptable for the employees, a number of questions must be studied. The first question pertains to what is being instructed. There are certain skills that require hands-on training, which would in turn necessitate instructional learning. Other skills can be taught in a simple internet setting, however, with the use of a discussion forum to provide answers to questions.
The next question relates to who is being taught. With several different individuals comprising a typical staff, the learning styles of those individuals is bound to be diverse. Some students may not have access to a computer and will not be able to partake in e-learning readily. Others may lack the fortitude for classroom learning. Developing a recipe of learning styles to suit the needs of today’s modern employees can require a lot of careful preparation. In the end, however, the majority wins.
Also, the flexibility of scheduling needs to be taken into account. While some employees can have days of learning scheduled with relative ease, other may have certain constraints to worry about. Scheduling requires flexibility and deciding between classroom learning and e-learning must take the schedules of the students into account, making the decision all the more convoluted.
