Evaluating E-Learning

Training – Risk vs. Reward - By Louis Trahan

It seems that there are more e-learning products cropping up every day. Much like a decaf cappuccino, much of what comprises e-learning lacks punch and effectiveness. Choosing the right e-learning facility for employees is a little like finding a needle in a haystack, as the countless choices can distract from the best options.
Worldwide spending on e-learning is a billion dollar industry. The growth in the industry is staggering, so it’s no wonder that so many companies are trying their hand at setting up their own e-learning facilities for training. Of course, too much choice can result in complications for those interested in hiring an e-learning group for employee training and education. How does one sift through the inevitably bad to get to the ostensibly good?

Diversity in E-Learning.

One thing to watch for is diversity in learning styles. While e-learning is a blossoming field, there still should be a high level of accommodation for those with different learning styles. This means that individuals who learn at slower paces should be able to keep up with the education, as should those who learn best in another language. All learning styles should be accommodated in e-learning.

Customization in E-Learning.

Another important facet of e-learning is the customization factor. This implies that course content should be flexible and customizable to allow for changes to be made to the outline to fit the needs of the students and of the employer. If the employer finds that his workers are learning useless information or redundant facts, he or she should be able to instruct the e-learning company to include his or her revisions upon request.

Flexibility in E-Learning.

Flexibility may sound a lot like customization, but there are some key differences. Flexibility in e-learning refers to the ability of the facility to allow its students the time and space in which to complete the course outline. Flexibility includes regulations on course completion, time constraints, and grading levels. Workers should be able to complete the course outlines at their own pace, allowing for equal learning across the board.
