External Private Training vs. In House Classroom Instruction

External Private Training vs. In House Classroom Instruction

The time has come for employee development and instruction, but most employers cannot decide between private training and classroom teaching in house. The options are seemingly endless within both facets of adult education and each has its own optimistic and unconstructive aspects. E-learning may have been pushed out of the circle for the time being, leaving the option of having instruction take place in one's own facility or having staff attend instruction somewhere else.

For some, this decision will be simple. If a company lacks the facilities to house training, the resolution is automatic and training must take place elsewhere. If, however, the company owns facilities that can double as a classroom, the decision encounters some complication. In the end, the owner must do what is best and most opportune for his or her staff.

Attendance

One of the first aspects involved in making this decision is the determination of class attendance. How many workers will be attending? Does transportation need to be prearranged? If training is in house, will the store or business need to remain closed for the time being or will there be available staff to cover? Will all staff members be on hand to attend classes?

Smaller class sizes may profit more from having training take place in house, as the individualized learning environment may seem more advantageous. Larger groups may benefit from the atmosphere of a larger classroom, of course. This difference is really a matter of personal feeling, as the destination of the class has more to do with the accessibility of the attendees and less to do with other factors.

Subject

The teaching of the subject will also have a bearing on where the training takes place. Some training will need to take place out of house if the facilities in house do not feature the equipment required. Some instructors bring equipment, however, rendering the entire conversation obsolete. For some workers, learning the subject in a new environment may be needlessly confusing. They may need to use the hands-on approach on their own software or hardware, for instance.

Overall, selecting the location and mode of instruction depends on the attendance and subject. The decision is often made pointlessly convoluted by the addition of other variables, but in the end the majority must rule and the final decision should benefit the bulk of the group. Extra provisions can be made if required.
