Free training for employees often sounds too good to be true. Far too often, it is. In today’s economy, disposable income at most companies is tight, especially smaller businesses. While larger companies may thrive under new economic stimulus packages, small businesses run into trouble when it comes to financing just about anything. Free training becomes a carrot that many small businesses simply will not ignore. But is free training worth the time?
Chamber of Commerce.
One of the first things any small business owner should do is check out the local Chamber of Commerce. This organization can provide lots of helpful hints and advice. Some locations even have onsite training that will be offered for free, but most will have information about where free training is available. Some locations offer free training with area professionals or skilled workers, enabling members of the general community to obtain new skills and information.
Packing up a whole staff and trucking off to the Chamber of Commerce may seem like a strange idea, but free training can’t be beat for the economic value. Libraries and government offices are also great places to look for free training.
Be Realistic.
When it comes to free training, the value of the training often matches the cost. With free training, the skills learned are likely going to be very basic. Most people use free training for skills that need to be “brushed up” or for very basic information. Rudimentary skills are often taught for free, but for employers who have more advanced necessities for their staff, a paid training company may be preferable.
Know the Risks.
Free training doesn’t come at much of a fiscal cost to business owners, but it does cost time and effort. Small businesses that cannot spare to lose much time should probably steer clear of most free training, but weekends and off-hours can be utilized to help fill in some of the gaps. Larger businesses may have more disposable time, but they also likely have more disposable income and can afford a more grandiose training plan.
Knowing the risks about training, whether free or paid, is integral for any business wanting to improve the educational worth of its staff. Free training might be cost-effective, but whether or not it is time-effective remains to be seen.
