Employment References Are So Important

Employment references are as important to the recruitment process now as they have always been, if not more so. The problem being they are now at times more difficult to receive than they were a few years ago.

Some useful facts:

A report by the CIPD shows that in 2007 employers withdrew 25% of job offers due to applicants misrepresenting their applications.

In a 2008 CIPD survey 75% of organisations state they always take up employement references

It is estimated that 12.5% of people exagerate or falsify their qualifications

The main purpose for obtaining employment references is to gain information about a candidate's employment history and the credibility of the CV and or application supplied. We have found that more and more employers are not issuing references due to the time factors involved and or the legal implications.

Employers in th UK do not have a common law duty to provide employment references for serving or past employees unless there is an express or implied term in the employment contract but refusal to give a reference can have an adverse effect on the employee. A leading UK judge Lord Sloan has indicated that although there may be no legal obligation to provide a reference there is a moral obligation to do so. (Spring v Guardian Assurance plc and others. 1994 ICR 596 HL)

To avoid being ignored or denied a reply for a reference you may want to consider outsourcing this function. A well written reference request with questions that are based on factual information and not subjective information has a far higher chance of a reply. A process of e-mail, post and telephone reference requests takes time but does achieve a higher response rate. The key points to receiving employment references are:

Supply a document for completion, do not rely on the referee having to start from scratch
Keep the document simple and the questions factual
Ensure it is not too time consuming to complete
Make it easy for the referee to reply, e-mail or pre-paid envelopes where applicable

However, I like to have the leisure to develop my own projects. The first case is what Stephen Covey calls a "Quadrant 1" activity ("Important and urgent") whereas the second case is a "Quadrant 2" activity ("Important, not urgent"). We should aim to make as much time as possible for Q2 activities so that we can develop our own projects. Easier said than done!

It’s enssential It’s enssential - Advertising is essential whether you advertise in big scale or small. Having a signage outside your store or office is already advertising. If you can't afford to advertise in newspapers or radio, you can try giving out flyers and brochures. Do email blasts. Have a blog or website. Send SMS or text messages to friends and relatives so they can pass it on to other friends. There are several ways in promoting and advertising your product without really spending so much. Important thing is, you should always let people know you exist. As the saying goes "A business with no sign is a sign of no business"
