Many office workers, particularly those entering the workforce for the first time, have few qualms about using their employers’ technology for personal use to visit My Space, text their friends, take/make personal phone calls, send and receive personal emails or shop on the Internet.
Since views differ, I asked some of my clients what their expectations are. All want a day’s work for a day’s pay, but have varying opinions ranging from “zero tolerance” to acceptance of the inevitable, but implementation of corrective action when the practice becomes “abusive.”
Main concerns:
· Security issues – exposure to viruses
· Worker productivity
· Slower server response times
· Visits to inappropriate/offensive websites
More structured companies have implemented:
· Monitoring software that takes “snapshots” of their employees’ computer screens
· Reviewing web histories
· Electronic communications policies that include a number of prohibitions
· Policies governing cell phone use at work
All agreed:
· Companies must decide what their workplace culture will be; e.g. personal use of company technology is okay as long as the work gets done; or it’s never okay; or degrees in between.
· Managers and supervisors must clarify their expectations.
· Policies and guidelines are evenly enforced across the board.
