Large corporations generally have policies in place to address these questions. However, smaller companies tend to have more of a “family” atmosphere where gift exchanges are common and giving the boss a present is pretty much expected. I suggest the following guidelines:
* Rank and file employees should not be asked to contribute. Collections should be limited to management.
* Contributions should be voluntary and anonymous with no repercussions for those who choose not to contribute.
* Gift exchanges between co-workers who are personal friends should take place outside the office.
The best solution is to do away with all office gift-giving. Rather select a family-oriented charity and tell employees if they want to they can bring in donations like disposable diapers, children’s clothing, blankets, toiletries, new games and toys, etc. The holidays can be celebrated in the office in other ways with lots of holiday decorations, good cheer and yummy treats. A generous gift card from the Boss wouldn’t hurt either!
