Our economy goes through cycles. After several years of growth, things are slowing down and businesses have to make adjustments accordingly. Employees who are fortunate enough not to be laid off are being asked to take on more responsibilities. This is not unusual. I think your company does care. By using normal attrition, they may be trying to avoid layoffs. My advice is to take on your new tasks with a positive attitude instead of complaints. Impress your supervisor with your skills, abilities and can-do approach. This could work in your favor if downsizing beyond attrition becomes necessary. If you hang tough, you might be in line for additional recognition or promotion when the economy picks up again. However, if the situation is too difficult for you, then you should seek employment elsewhere, but don’t be surprised if you find the same situation.
