Sometimes qualified candidates are passed over because there is bad, or no, chemistry with the interviewer. This sort of thing happens in our personal lives as well. Couples date and break up because they aren’t a good fit. The same thing happens in the workplace. If you do get hired, you have to fit in with your co-workers. Company cultures differ too. Some companies are very structured and have a policy for everything. Others are more flexible. If you are more comfortable in a flexible environment, you would not be well suited to a structured workplace. If you like structure, you might have a hard time adapting to a loosely managed company. Does the company encourage individual accomplishments or does it promote teamwork? Are you a “sole contributor” or do you excel when part of a team? These are questions you need to ask during the interview process. Find out what the culture of the organization is and what is expected of its workers. These behaviors might help when starting a new job. Get along with your co-workers. Learn as much as you can. Listen more than you speak. Don’t be overbearing, critical or gossipy. Be good-natured. Carry your fair share of the load, more if necessary. Build a reputation for being dependable, and whatever your assignment, do it well.
