Job sharing is a great idea, in theory, but not easy to implement.
Advantages:
* It provides steady, part-time work for individuals who for whatever reason do not need or want to work full-time.
* Can be used as an interim step toward retirement. Gives a retiring person opportunity to “wean” him/herself from full-time employment.
* Frequently, job-sharers are eligible for fringe benefits.
* Employers that offer job-sharing benefit financially if they do not provide benefits to part-time workers.
* Job sharers often fill in for one another when one is off sick or on vacation, so the position is always covered.
* The employer has two heads instead of one from which to draw ideas, suggestions for improvement, etc.
Disadvantages:
* The hours are not flexible. Each job sharer is typically assigned specific hours on specific days of the week.
* The employer has to find two people equally qualified who only want to work part-time, and often with no benefits; and maybe most importantly, two people who can get along, have a similar work ethic and won’t get caught up in a power struggle.
