Providing References - What the "Seasoned" Worker Should Do

Storing unneeded records is costly, so companies usually purge their records as soon as possible without violating record retention laws. Few records are required to be held beyond five years. In this day of fast-moving technology, the positions you held more than ten years ago likely are no longer relevant to a position you are applying for today. I recommend you list only the last ten years on your resume. Your references, therefore, should be focused on your most recent work history. You might want to put together a list of your former supervisors, subordinates and peers who would be willing to speak to a prospective employer about your professional experience. Even if they have retired or moved on to other jobs, you could contact them at their homes and ask if you might use them as references.
