Disability Etiquette # 1 Mobility Impairment
A common reason for relutance to offer assistance to a mobility impaired person is the fear of bungling the job. This fear is not entrirely unrealistic; it is definitely possible for a well-meaning person to do more harm than good. However a positive outcome can occur ifcertain guidelinesare followed. When interacting with an indiviual who is mobility impaired remember the following:
- First ask if help is wanted before beginning to asist
- If an offer is accepted, find specifically what needs to be done.
- After hearing the instructions, proceed only after you are sure you understand what needs to be done and fell capble of doing it.
- Stay a moment and make sure matters are in hand before taking your leave.
- Hold the door itself rather than trying to grab an arm, cane or wheelchair
- Never begin pushing a wheel chair withour first asking the occupant whether help is desired.
- Help is more likely to be appreciated with a manual chair than achair that is motorized.
- If a person has fallen, ask if assistance is wanted or offer your arm, without grabbing, for the fallen person to take if needed.
- When approching steps with a person who walks with difficulty, walk at thier side and extend an arm to be used for support and balance.
