Disability Etiquette # 2 - Visual Impairment
When interacting with an individual who is visually immpaired:
- Always ask first whether help is wanted. If your offer is accepted, be sure you understand what needs to be done before initiating any action
- The single most important thing that a person can do for a visually impaied person is to furnish relevant information about the immediate environment. Often just a few words can make a welcome difference.
- Furnish simple information without hesitation any time it seems appropriate.
- Avoid drawing undue attention to yourself and the person who you are helping. For example don't shout.
- When describing turns or curves, use well defined terms such as "left," "right," "north," or "clockwise rather than vague terms such as "over there" or "veer off". If you are facing the person, do not confuse your left with the individual's left.
- When you walk with a person who is visually impaired, offer your arm,but do not grab their arm.
- Watch for obtacles when walking with a visually impaired indidivual..
- A guide dog is always on duty when wearing its harness. Do not pet or play with the dog without permission of the owner
