Luncheon Meetings - NoNos
Dear Dr. Jo:
In my book, Workplace Etiquette, I discuss some dos and don'ts. Luncheon meetings are the most popular business meal, especially in these economic times. Usually you can discuss business after you order the meal. During the meal, time should be allowed to chew and digest your food.
- Avoid the lunch crunch; schedule your lunch early or at a restaurant that takes lunch reservations.
- Don't drink hard liquor at lunch - it creates the impression that you have a drinking problem
- If you must drink, limit yourself to one wine or beer.
- Don't talk on the cell phone or text at the table. If you absolutely must make or take a call or text, go to a private spot.
- Don't apply makeup, not even lipstick, at the table.
- Keep your elbows off the table while eating, but you may rest your forearms when not eating.
- Excuse yourself for all biological functions, including the need to blow your nose.
- Don't use a toothpick at the table.
- Don't leave your purse, keys sunglasses on the table
- All food should be eaten in manageable bites without overfilling the mouth.
- Close your mouth when you eat and never talk with a mouth full of food.
