Introduction to ISO: 9001:2008 Standard

The rules of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) require that all standards are reviewed every five years to ensure that they reflect the best practice in the particular subject and take into account any lessons that have been learnt during the application of the standard. The outcome of these reviews is that standards are confirmed, revised or withdrawn. In 1990 the technical committee (TC 176) responsible for ISO 9001 adopted a two-phase revision process. The first phase, undertaken in 1994, resulted in limited changes to the standard. In 1996 TC176 reaffirmed the two-phase revision process and preparation of the second phase revisions is now in progress.

The first review and revision in 1994 represented, in general, a "tidying up" exercise intended to clarify and any previous areas of ambiguity and make better use the standards.

This second revision is intended to be a much more fundamental set of changes and includes a significant number of changes both in style and content of the standards.

In 1997 TC 176 undertook a global survey of users and customers of ISO 9001 and the following significant needs, amongst others, were determined from an analysis of the responses:

In the same year, 1997, TC176 also issued a document entitled "Quality Management Principles and Guidelines on their Application: (ref. ISO/TC176/SC 2/N130).

Whilst the 1994 standard were not developed on the basis of this Quality Management Principles (QMP) there are of course aspects of the standard, which addresses some of their requirements. The 2008 standard have been developed from the Quality Management Plans and the chart below shows how the changes between 1994 and 2000 move the standard closer to the requirements of the QMPs.

Re: Broken delivery guarantees Re: Broken delivery guarantees - Well just as an update, the package finally arrived on September 4th, which means the FedEx "Overnight Standard Delivery" turned out to take 4 days! I decided to just keep the order since it caused so much trouble. Moreover, I don't want to have to deal with FedEx again to return the parcel back to the vendor.

Re: Hot Stock Tip! Re: Hot Stock Tip! - Well, I found out why Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae stock is tanking. According to Bloomberg.com: [quote:2ui2en3y]Standard & Poor's may downgrade the subordinated bonds of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, surprising investors who had anticipated the securities would be supported by any Treasury rescue plan. [/quote:2ui2en3y] So you see, I [i:2ui2en3y]was [/i:2ui2en3y]right to buy Freddie Mac stock... (I'd certainly anticipated that the bill would not let silly loopholes exist to continue threaten the two organizations) the only problem is that some dumb politician didn't put in the right phraseology in the bill, so now people are bailing again...

Re: I disagree with Kevin on this.... - [quote="ideasuniversity":qyp59z7d]Hi Kevin, You are doing a great job here, but i will like to disagree on the point that welcoming a Newbie is irrelevant post. We need to welcome them and encourage them to stay and particpate in the forum. This gesture may mean a lot to a new comer here.[/quote:qyp59z7d] I'll agree with that. My first post in this forum was in the Introduction section. The welcomes I received from forum members was very much appreciated. I think welcoming new members has a lot of value, especially for that new member. Posts such as these don't contain targeted questions or help facilitate inspiring conversations. But, I do believe they are important, nonetheless. I wish I could be more help in finding a suitable candidate, but the ones I can think of are already moderators.
Broken delivery guarantees Broken delivery guarantees - Hi Everyone, I recently had a bad online purchasing experience due delivery problems. A tennis retailer I ordered from had used FedEx's Standard Overnight shipping to try and deliver my package to my friend's place in NY on Friday, August 29th. However, since my friend was at work and the condo doorman was perhaps on a break, FedEx brought it back to their depot. Keep in mind that I was only in NY for the long weekend, so I wouldn't even be able to get my order when they try to make a 2nd delivery attempt. So what's the point of calling it "Overnight delivery" when I didn't end up getting my package the next day? Most residential addresses won't have anyone at home to accept parcels because everyone is at work, so why even bother trying to deliver something during the day if you can't leave it there? And get this, FedEx then tries to deliver the goods again on Tues, Sept 2nd but reports it's the "incorrect address" and there's no such place. But then how come they found condo on Aug 29th? My order was just shipping in their depot on Sept 3rd and according to their online tracking, it's supposed to be delivered sometime today on Sept 4th. We'll see. FedEx's Overnight shipping has turned into 3+ days shipping. What would you do? I was so infuriated that I wanted to just cancel the order and ask FedEx to return it back to the retailer. I've never had any of these sort of problems with UPS.
