Immigration, Wages, & Grammar

As I write this, there are ICE raids taking place in Oxnard & Lodi, CA. “ICE” stands for Immigration & Customs Enforcement, the enforcement arm of the Department of Homeland Security. This is the group that arrives unannounced at worksite (and residences) to review workers’ work authorization documents; Social Security cards, USA passports, Permanent Alien cards, etc.

The raids in Oxnard are focused on packing houses and other Ag-related industries, as far as I know, and at one business alone, six out of the twenty-two employees were found to have an invalid social security number (or it wasn’t assigned to them).

We have discussed this before: in years past, the raids have been primarily focused on large employers of Latinos, especially in agriculture and hospitality industries, but in the last two years nearly every type and size of business has been targeted. So again, I remind even the small business owner to audit your I-9s: Are the documents used to establish identity and authorization to work in the United States the correct ones? The only documents accepted as proof are listed on one of the pages of the I-9 form.

In other news: Wages may be on the way back up. The Bureau of National Affairs has released the latest figures they call their Wage Trend Indicator. Over the 12 months ended in the fourth quarter of 2010, wages grew 1.8 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s employment cost index (ECI), up from a 1.3 percent increase in 2009. The rate of annual wage and salary growth for private-sector workers in the upcoming months is expected to be close to 2 percent, according to the report. This report echoes what we’re hearing from other sources: three big players in the prediction business predict wage growth from 2 to 3% in the rest of 2011. We also hear that employers are having trouble filling professional and technical jobs. Economic forecasters’ expectations for the rate of inflation are not reflecting the wage increases yet, but I expect these figures will join the rising gas prices in impacting our pocketbooks soon. Remember that your employees hear the news, too, so their expectations may match what they hear: as in 2008 & 2009, it is best to be up front with your employees, so that they know what to expect from you.

And finally: When I hosted my daily radio talk show in the late 80’s and early 90’s I got used to the occasional listener calling up to correct my grammar or some other mistake I made. The callers were invariably respectful, and my mom was the only one embarrassed to hear that I still didn’t know the difference between “lie” and “lay”. I recalled those moments when I took a message off my answering machine last month and heard a reader inform me that “only female mosquitoes suck blood.” This remark threw me until I remembered that in describing a Bizarro cartoon I had referred to the mosquitoes as “guys”.

Thanks for paying attention.
