DELEGATION FOR BEGINNERS
Independence is the cornerstone of our nation, our ideals, and our business environment. Our country was founded on the principles of hard-work, ownership, and autonomy. As business owners and managers it is so difficult to give up or give over control to someone else. The very thing that makes you successful, your ability to grow, build and manage your business can quickly become overwhelming when your hard work pays off. The control freak in you doesn’t want to let go, but a few strategies may help you to feel more comfortable.
• Acknowledge that you are a control freak – If you are, and many of us are, it’s okay. Knowing that you may have a hard time letting go is the first step to successful delegation.
• Let go SLOWLY – You don’t have to give up control of every single detail all at once, just the ones that some one else can handle. For example, you may decide that you will delegate responsibility for cleaning supplies and services this month. In a month or two, you may choose to delegate your next ‘lowest’ priority. This will allow you to decide which pieces you really want to give up.
• Follow Up On the Tasks You’ve Delegated – If you’re new to giving up control, your staff may be unsure of their role or tasks, and may not feel comfortable asking questions. Your follow-up and genuine concern will keep you posted on the progress and give them the avenue to ask questions.
• Face Your Fears – The fear of the unknown is the ultimate lack of control and it can be absolutely terrifying. If the idea of letting go of something terrifies you to that point, face your fears head-on. Discuss your concerns with a trusted co-worker, advisor or mentor.
• Seek Out the Experts – If there is no one in your organization to handle tasks or projects that should be off your plate, seek out consultants or experts who will be able to handle the work.
As an admitted control-freak, I know how difficult it can be to delegate tasks, especially when you’ve put so much time and energy into perfecting your systems. But once your systems are perfected, you can easily teach someone else to handle tasks – one step at a time – giving you more time to create, grow, and build …… the pieces that you enjoy the most.
