YOUR EMPLOYEES ARE REALLY VOLUNTEERS
At a recent leadership breakfast held through Lehigh Universities Iacocca institute the speaker made mention that employees are really just volunteers. And it made me think…..if employees are volunteers at our organization, meaning they volunteer to accept employment with us…that means they can volunteer to work here and they can volunteer to leave.
The reality is that your employees can work anywhere they choose. In this marketplace and in our workforce environment overall…the most desired employees are either working or they have options available to them. Let’s discuss this for a moment. Who are the most desired employees? We interview hundreds, if not thousands of employees a year for positions ranging from store clerks all the way to CEO’s. The desired attributes are typically similar in most positions. These include:
• Strong work ethics
• A progressive work history – jobs show steady increase in responsibilities
• Not overqualified- not under qualified
• Reasonable pay history and expectations
• Strong core values that are apparent
• Likeable
(the exception may be hard to fill positions such as - high tech positions )
When employees such as those with the attributes listed above “volunteer” to work at your organization, you may want to ask yourself the following:
• Am I thankful for the opportunity to have this employee on staff?
• Is the enthusiasm to have this employee on staff shared by the rest of the associates?
• Is my work environment inviting and conducive to retaining employees of this caliber?
• Does the new employee experience the gratitude?
• Then ask yourself …are all of the above real or my own perception?
With our hiring management services we assist with hiring for hundreds of companies both locally and nationwide. We interview constantly day after day- year after year. I can very openly share with you that when the high caliber applicants apply for positions with our client companies we feel gratitude and excitement for both parties. We know that if the process ends up in a hire and the employee volunteers to work for our client that this is a great day for all involved.
We also know that the employee has many volunteer opportunities. Take a moment to be thankful, say thank you and understand how lucky you are for these strong team members. Remember you did not just choose them to work for you; they chose YOU to work for.
