Talent Development and The Wheel of Becoming
|
| Guest post by: Ben Nash |
Article Overview: In the Buddhist belief, the Wheel of Becoming is a representation of life, death, and rebirth. The energy produced by one’s past actions (karma) are paid forward into future outcomes. Practitioners can determine their place within the concentric circles of the wheel, which delineate the various realms of being (see the graphic above). In talent management terms, think of the Wheel of Becoming as transitioning from one level of personal development to rebirth at a higher level. There are many models of human development (see Jane Lovinger’s “Stages of Ego Development”, or Robert Kegans “The Evolving Self” to name but two). One that fits neatly with the concept of Wheel of Becoming, however, is “The Leadership Pipeline” by Charan, Drodder, and Noel.

Talent Development and The Wheel of Becoming
In the Buddhist belief, the Wheel of Becoming is a representation of
life, death, and rebirth. The energy produced by one’s past actions
(karma) are paid forward into future outcomes. Practitioners can
determine their place within the concentric circles of the wheel, which
delineate the various realms of being (see the graphic above).
In talent management terms, think of the Wheel of Becoming as
transitioning from one level of personal development to rebirth at a
higher level. There are many models of human development (see Jane
Lovinger’s “Stages of Ego Development”, or Robert Kegans “The Evolving
Self” to name but two). One that fits neatly with the concept of Wheel
of Becoming, however, is “The Leadership Pipeline” by Charan, Drodder,
and Noel.
The six turns in the Leadership Pipeline are like six turns on the
Wheel of Becoming. They represent significant psychological passages
that can’t be mastered in a day or by taking a course. Once you grasp
what these passages entail and the challenges involved in making each
leadership transition, you’ll be in a better position to use this
information to unclog your organization’s leadership pipeline and
facilitate your own growth as a leader. Going through these passages
helps leaders build emotional strength as they take on tasks of
increasing complexity and scope.
The six passages are:
- From managing self to managing others
- From managing others to managing managers
- From managing managers to functional manager
- From functional manager to business manager
- From business manager to group manager
- From group manager to enterprise manager
