Zero Reward, Zero Recognition: Will That Be Your Dream Company?

If that would have been the values of an organization, would you like to work for them even if they pay you handsomely well? Will you still continue even if your manager tells you "Why should I recognize or thank you? You just doing your job." Will you still perform even if the organization fails to create an environment that provides recognition to you and your colleagues? Let me get your views on the two scenarios, I am about to share with you.

Zero Recognition Inc. (Young HR Manager's brain child)

Imagine yourself working for ZRI (Zero Recognition Inc.). The management philosophy of ZRI is to neither prioritize employee recognition nor appreciate them for their hard work or efforts. They do not want to understand the power of a reward & recognition system. They also fail to understand that recognition and rewards system is a powerful communication tool which will create a healthy and performance oriented work environment. Words like morale, motivation, appreciation, congratulations etc does not seem to be included in their organizational dictionary. They know that they are paying you exceptionally well in comparison with other organizations for the job you are doing, so no point in again paying you back by recognizing or appreciating.

Your boss is inducted in such a manner that whatever best you do at the end of the day your pay check is the only reward or appreciation token you should expect from the management. No differentiation is created by identifying and rewarding performers from non performers.

ZRI rarely treats their employees with any appreciation and they only seem to notice you when you make a mistake or they receive a customer complaint against you. Your self motivation is the only deriving force for you.

You know that you are been paid the best in the industry, but will you still long for the appreciation or recognition which is due for your efforts and hard work ?

Delightful Rewarding Inc.

DRI's philosophy is focused around the welfare and happiness of its employees. They believe in rewarding their employees for their dedication and performance, which generates goodwill toward them and the management. This emotional connection with DRI enhances employees' work performance and achievement orientation. You too being an employee here enjoy privileges and respect from your bosses in the form of appreciations and rewards from time to time. Even if your salary is quite low in comparison to the one paid at ZRI, you and your fellow colleagues enjoy recognition for your efforts and performance.

Your motivation is quite high and you feel proud to be a part of DRI. DRI believes that rewards and recognition system is a powerful communication tool which helps them in creating an environment of healthy competition within the organization. Employees look up to these rewards and aspire to participate and also win.

You feel that you are been under paid, however still you are working with DRI, what for?

The above work practices and philosophies of ZRI and DRI clearly differentiate them from one another. For one rewarding or recognizing their employees' has no importance while for another recognizing or rewarding is a way of life. ZRI feels that they are paying you well for the responsibility given to you then no point in again spending in the form of rewards whereas DRI believes that apart from salary they are also appreciating your innovation and creativity by strong rewards and recognition system.

We are currently working in a very dynamic environment. We people want everything from gadgets to cars, to our own home and the best of living for us and our family. We want to have all the riches and want to live a life of luxury and comfort. To fulfill all your dreams, at the end of the day you require a good pay check from your company. All these facilities can be bought if you earn really really well.

Re: Finding AND Keeping Good People Re: Finding AND Keeping Good People - Employee retention or as you mention “Keeping the Good People” is one of the biggest challenges for any growing business. It takes a huge effort from the entrepreneur’s end. I can come up with the following when it comes to KEEPing the good people- 1. Motivation of the employees 2. Recognition of the needs of the employees 3. Activities to make the employees feel valuable towards the organization 4. Make benefits more accessible 5. Offer profit sharing incentives 6. Create clear career paths at the company 7. Consider telecommuting, job sharing and other flexible working arrangements 8. Incentives are essential and they don't have to be huge 9. Have other managers praise an employee's work 10. Be sensitive to the balance between work and private life
