Want to Know the Biggest Source of Stress at Work? Check the Office Next Door
There's a fascinating article in yesterday's New York Times that, once again, has some dismal news about employee satisfaction. Apparently, it's at an all-time low. Less you think it's all about the economy, a survey of 5000 workers revealed that the major sources of dissatisfaction had to do with the job itself and, in particular, the immediate supervisor.
The annual performance review, in particular, came under fire as a major source of angst for employees. What was interesting about the critique is that most criticisms I've read about performance reviews had to do either with a) the substitution of a formal annual process at the expense of providing regular, ongoing feedback, or b) the structure of the form itself (for example, a forced rating system or vague rating descriptions that provided little useful direction to the employees being reviewed. This article, however, offers the argument that the annual review is less about the employee's actual performance and more a reflection of how much the supervisor likes the employee (check out Paul in NYC's ironic interpretation of his performance review ratings in the comments section).
This Job is Killing Me
Another disheartening focus of this article is the significant mental and physical health problems that arise when an employee works in a toxic environment - depression, high blood pressure, heart problems. Not surprisingly, the immediate supervisor had an enormous impact -good bosses served as a buffer against other workplace stressors while destructive leaders amplified other workplace pressures - on the stress level of employees.
While in theory employees have avenues for dealing with a bad boss (human resources, the boss's boss), in reality, employees often fear retaliation for speaking out against an abusive supervisor. Unfortunately, this can tempt an employee to try to regain a sense of control indirectly, i.e., by attempting to covertly sabotage the boss (calling in sick when there's an important deadline, turning in work late or doing a bad job on it). This, of course, ultimately hurts the employee.
So What's the Solution?
I wish I knew. The most disturbing part of this article to me was the barrage of bitter, cynical comments that followed it. While I do work with plenty of companies who hold supervisors accountable for their relationships with their employees, I encounter many more who don't.
In the meantime, if you're an employee stuck in a toxic work environment, the onus is on you to take the best care of yourself you can. Find a mentor who can give you emotional support and brainstorm with you about how to handle your bad boss, keep updating your skills and marketability, exercise and eat right and, if things don't get better, get the heck out of there when you have the chance. If you're an employer, it's time to invest in the people who make you money - and deal with the ones who are blocking their progress.

Books for Women Entrepreneurs
- There's a thread for good books in the Resources folder, but it doesn't target books for businesswomen particularly, so I figured I'd start such a thread here.
It doesn't matter how successful you are in your business - it's always possible to learn something new.
In subsequent posts I give Table of Contents and brief descriptions for various titles - most of them devoted to the businesswoman - and sometimes a review. If anyone else has read a review, or has read the book and found it useful, please comment!

Why pay a Consultant?
- Consultants can bring you into contact with a Funding Source but how do you tell whether a consultant will be successful beforehand?
Professional Consultants ALWAYS ask for some kind of retainer so that they can feel they're not being used by a 'chancer'. However, when raising funding, a real consultant will offer to REFUND THAT RETAINER out of the % BROKERAGE he charges, payable once he finds your Funding Source, and payable from initial disbursements.
Retainers only cover part of the costs that a consultant has to pay while working on behalf of the Client. Their real wages come from the agreed upon Brokerage, received when they are successful on the Client's behalf.
Re: Infographic: The 4 Main Stress Factors
- I'd like to reference that article in my next blog post as well.. I worked in sales for years and found that days when I was positive, relaxed where days that it was easy to sell. On days that I was stressed I found I would not reach target. Stress is good at times, but it very easily becomes problematic. I do a lot of very physical exercise and work now, to manage it.
Ways To Improve Your Alexa Ranking 1-5
- I came across a blog post that listed 20 ways to improve your Alexa ranking and thought it would be worth sharing. There are 20 suggestions in total that I'll spread out over the next 4 days to give you some food for thought:
1. Install the Alexa toolbar or Firefox’s SearchStatus extension and set your blog as your homepage. This is the most basic step.
2. Put up an Alexa rank widget on your website. I did this a few days ago and receive a fair amount of clicks every day. According to some, each click counts as a visit even if the toolbar is not used by the visitor.
3. Encourage others to use the Alexa toolbar. This includes friends, fellow webmasters as well as site visitors/blog readers. Be sure to link to Alexa’s full explanation of their toolbar and tracking system so your readers know what installing the toolbar or extension entails.
4. Work in an Office or own a company? Get the Alexa toolbar or SS Firefox extension installed on all computers and set your website as the homepage for all browsers. Perhaps it will be useful to note that this may work only when dynamic or different IPs are used.
5. Get friends to review and rate your Alexa website profile. Not entirely sure of its impact on rankings but it might help in some way.
Greetings From Destiny's Door
- Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the invitation to introduce myself. I'm looking forward to being part of the discussions here.
I called my business "Destiny’s Door Coaching" because I believe you already have everything it takes to create the business of your dreams. The door to your destiny stands always open. The choice is up to you.
I work with Business Women and Entrepreneurs who want to create a life and business that matches their true potential, while still allowing them time to do the things they love most. I support them as they discover how to work smarter and not harder.
I coach because I am passionate about seeing women achieve amazing things when they fully accept their own greatness. Business really gives women a great opportunity to express their passions and purpose in a way that also brings financial rewards.
I believe you are highly important as the foundation of your business. As you grow and unleash your true potential, you enable your business to do the same.
In fact, I'm doing that personally through my own business. I coach women and write articles inviting women to step into greater personal success. As a Certified Life Coach with a Degree in ministry, this is a perfect fit for me.
On a personal level, I believe in living fully alive and making the most of every moment. I even have my own Coach! Of course, life is always a work in progress, but I keep moving forward. I do this happily in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of B.C. with my husband and two feline companions.
Anyhow, I look forward to meeting you through the forum where we can challenge and inspire each other to really grow towards our full potential.
Let’s really commit to creating the businesses of our dreams. I’ll meet you at Destiny’s Door!
Warmly,
Tami
