To Write or Type, that is the question: Being the Memorable Candidate

I recently was on a short business trip in Singapore interviewing candidates. I interviewed a candidate on Wednesday and the candidate left a lasting impression based on his follow-up actions. I not only received an email that evening, the next day I received a “Christmas card” thank you note (it was the week of the Christmas holiday). The candidate knew I was in from our US corporate headquarters and he took the time to not only send an email, but came back to the office and dropped of a handwritten Christmas card-thank you note. I cannot say if the candidate is the top choice for the position, what I can say is he was memorable and moved to the top of the “pile” based on his follow-up actions.

I have a personal bias for handwritten notes. Handwritten notes are personalized and demonstrate care. Now I know some may say emails can be personalized, which I agree, but there is nothing like a tangible note that you have to physically open and read versus clicking an email icon or risk that the email is overlooked, deleted or sent to the spam folder. Remember, people do not “delete” or overlook a physical note or letter. When a letter or note arrives in the mail, with their name on it, people are intrigued and eager to open it and read it.

For your next post interview follow-up, consider this story and decide if you will write or type.

FYI, invest in some nice stationary today (I get mine from Embossed Graphics (Google them)– 50 Personalized note cards for $35, great quality).

Here it is: Write the blog post / article you were born to write. Write something that you can pour your heart and all your passion into. Write something where you can change the life of the person reading it. Write something where if you look back in 10 years you'll be really proud of what you created. Can you do that? I'd love to read it (and I bet a lot of others will too!)
Re: How should a young entrepreneur dress to impress? Re: How should a young entrepreneur dress to impress? - Type of dress is always the question on most new entrepreneur's minds'. Unfortunately, it all depends on the specific situation. If you are meeting someone for the first time, and it is in relation to business or potential business, then a suit and tie is the way to go. Stay conservative and don't go in with flashy ties. Get solid tone wear for those occasions. If you're meeting someone, and they are not unknown to you, then you can maybe afford to dawn a flashier tie or dress down a little. However, in all of my business dealings I would never go to jeans. I would always stick to dress pants and a tucked in button up shirt up top with a collar. Stick to dress shoes in both occasions, and try to find something that is comfortable. I have two pairs of dress shoes - one has laces and one does not. I frequently wear the one without because it is easier to put on and far more comfortable after a day of meetings and discussions.
Re: Gap Between Rich and Poor Widens Re: Gap Between Rich and Poor Widens - THX GT Bulmer for your view. What was on my mind are the S.S. statistics; that 95% of the population end up with only a S.S. check by the time they're/we're 65. That's pityful in comparison to some of todays teens earning millions. Type "teen millionaires" in a search engine. I do believe that most of us squander 99%-99.99% of our God-given 'talents.' God Bless all.
Re: Do Articles For Businesswomen need to be written differently Re: Do Articles For Businesswomen need to be written differently - I don't think that as a general rule an article [i:11csddi3]needs[/i:11csddi3] to be written "for women." In my opinion, the two important writing rules are: 1) Write for your targeted audience. If it happens to be predominantly women or predominantly men, then write accordingly (if you have the ability to make that distinction in your writing). 2) Write in your own voice. Be natural. If you are a serious writer, your style will become apparent over time and you will develop a following. It may happen that your style is more attractive to one sex or the other. If so, you may be able to advance your writing career by further cultivating your sensitivity within that style. Bottom line: I do believe that certain styles appeal to women, certain styles appeal to men and if you know the distinction, have the ability to write in a particular style and choose to target one sex or the other, then go for it. But I don't think that it is a necessity in today's market. GT :-]
4 Ideas for Viral Marketing 4 Ideas for Viral Marketing - 1. Purchase the branding rights to a viral E-book. Allow people to give away your free E-book to their visitors. Then, their visitors will also give it away. This will just continue to spread your ad all over the Internet. 2. If you have the ability to set up a forum or other bulletin board, you really have a great tool. Allow people to use your online discussion board for their own website. Some people don't have one. Just include your banner ad at the top of the board. 3. Write an E-book. Allow people to place an advertisement in your free E-book if, in exchange, they give away the E-book to their web visitors or E-zine subscribers. 4. Write articles that pertain to your product or service. Allow people to reprint your articles on their website, in their E-zine, newsletter, magazine or E-books. Include your resource box and the option for article reprints at the bottom of each article.
