How Hollywood Can Make You an Interview Star
Congratulations! You’ve just been offered an interview for your dream job! If this news strikes you with excitement and dread, then it’s time to start thinking Hollywood.
Many people let nervousness or lack of confidence get in the way of showing an employer their true value. By asking yourself, “What would my favourite celebrity do?” you can unlock your potential to be an Interview Star!
Think of someone you admire who seems to have it all: success, confidence, status, poise, and more. Someone who portrays only excellence. The truth is that celebrities are just as human as you are and know how it feels to be nervous. By applying their secrets for success, you can become an Interview Star!
It is important to understand that being a high performer in an interview is not so different from being a high performer on stage. In both cases you are in the spotlight with the opportunity to display your skill to an expectant audience.
There are 5 key components to becoming an Interview Star:
- Know your audience.
- Learn your lines.
- Get into character.
- Rehearse for a flawless performance.
- Find a good agent!
1. Know your audience: Here’s where you have to do your homework and get to know as much about the organization, position, and the style of your interview as possible.
2. Learn your lines: Spend some time cataloguing your career, educational, and personal accomplishments. Ask yourself what education, experience or natural abilities you have successfully displayed in the past that prove that you will be a top performer in the job you are interviewing for.
3. Get into character: By pretending to actually be someone you admire for their poise and self-possession, you assume a “suit of confidence”. Ask yourself how that person would stand, sit, or speak. What body language would he or she use to project confidence? Image is everything and by determining an image for yourself you put personal marketing power to work for you! Decide ahead of time how you will perform during your interview.
If you have had the forethought to send a cover letter and resume that promotes your unique value to this employer, then half your image work is already done. All you have to do is to personify your strengths and accomplishments.
4. Rehearse for a flawless performance: Now that you’ve done all your homework, do what all the best stage performers do and bring it to life by lifting it off the page and making it conversational.
How do you get to Carnegie Hall? The same way you win the job…practice, practice, practice. An audition is just a job interview for stage performers and there is every reason why you should prepare in the same way!
Make sure that your relevant accomplishments, strengths, experience and expertise are ready to roll off your tongue in a way that easily shows the employer your ability to be a top performer within their organization.
5. Find a good agent: Celebrities team up with agents and coaches who can help them capitalize on career opportunities and prepare for auditions. A Certified Interview Coach can give you the same competitive advantage by guiding you through the process of preparing for and succeeding in a job interview.
Finally, remember that this is your time in the spotlight, so let your inner celebrity shine through and stand out from the crowd as an Interview Star! Related Articles
