Consumers Worldwide Demand More CSR

A few years ago, we first reported the results from the global Cone Cause Survey, focusing on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Just last week, Cone (together with Echo Research) released a new report, the "2011 Cone/Echo Global CR Opportunity Study". Consumers are demanding a higher level of responsibility by companies in dealing with societal issues; consumers report they are already voting with their wallets and loyalty to make these demands felt. The study had a sample size of ten thousand consumers in ten major countries around the globe, including United States, Canada, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Russia, China, India and Japan.

Among the overall key findings: a huge 81 percent of consumers said companies have a responsibility to address key social and environmental issues beyond their local communities; they want the companies to step up to the plate and do the right thing to help those in need in their communities. At the same time, even more (93 percent) of respondents believe companies must go beyond what their local laws require to operate responsibly. Likewise, 94 percent want companies to analyze and evolve their business practices to make their impact as positive as possible.

However, there were important nuances by country. The bottom line: companies must customize their corporate responsibility strategies based on geography. This imperative means companies should have a broad vision to guide the core principles of engagement, then adapt them at the market level. The only caveat is that this adaptation requires an in-depth understanding of what will motivate consumers locally.

"Consumers around the world want companies to be a force for good, both in the way they do business and in devoting their resources to address societal issues," said Alison DaSilva, executive vice president at Cone Communications. "Just as important, many consumers globally now report they are activists, rewarding companies who act responsibly and punishing companies who do not," she added.

We have oft reported, Corporate Social Responsibility would increase in importance. As more Gen Xers and Millennials assume positions of power and influence, we can expect that trend to become increasingly strong.

Re: MUST READ: Rules & Guidelines for Review My... Re: MUST READ: Rules & Guidelines for Review My... - That's a pretty good mock review without ever having to buy one of those things. I think it's a good angle that they have with the diet program but not enough positioning to make it standout or justify that $100+$40. Consumers look for value these days.
Re: How do you critique a small business? Re: How do you critique a small business? - There are so many great comments here. One thing that is missing is alignment of the business with the owner's values and the employees' values. We all have values and if there is a disconnect with our personal and business values, the business could be exposed to serious trouble. It might sound like fluffy talk, but I'm actually referring to the bottom line: Money! Consumers will not continue to buy products that don't align with their values, employees will be unhappy (read less productivity and increased sick time and maybe even quit), and the owner will not be fully satisfied either. I could go on and on, but you get the picture. Every dollar saved translates into dollars earned. Here's the power of values... there is a certain clothing designer that myself and others I know simply will not support because that person is openly racist. I can tell you I like their stuff, but I will not buy it! I could provide values tests for the potential winners to fill out and make the comparison. The great thing is that whoever fills it out will also be appraised of an area in their business which could be strengthened. That in itself is a huge reward!

Re: No guru is an island Re: No guru is an island - [quote="litekepr":33vnrk1w]Something said in the original post reminded me of the years that I worked closely with critique groups on my novels. I joined the group and we each gave input and critiques to one another regarding our writing. At first I took their comments as something that I HAD to do. However, there were plenty of times when their comments went against the things that I felt were best for the stories. In one instance, I had submitted a book to a publisher and she asked for some minor changes. I was still receiving comments from my critique group and so I went ahead and made all the changes they suggested. I finally finished all the revisions and resubmitted it to the publisher. Problem is - she read the first couple of chapters and call me to ask what happened to the story that she loved. The changes the group suggested had chanced the story and eliminated my unique "voice" in my story. I learned the definite lesson that day to weigh the comments and suggestions, but often you need to go with your gut instinct when it feels like the wrong thing for you. Shri[/quote:33vnrk1w] Litekepr, Many books had been trashed and bury by the so called guru. Many songs that could win great awards had not seen the light of the day because of the so called expert. This is the reason authors should not be give up on their dreams even when they are faced with lot of critisism. This is the reason I prefer to self- publish my books. With thousands of Print On Demand companies out there, you can print your book starting with 50 copies
How To Build Great Pillar Content For Your Internet Business How To Build Great Pillar Content For Your Internet Business - I’ve found that a successful Internet businesses must start with a solid foundation. As I’ve seen, most Internet businesses will integrate a blog onto their website and start to build a solid foundation of pillar content. Pillar content or pillar articles are posts that are written to help a consumer establish what your Internet business is all about. What Is Pillar Content? This termed was first coined by a famous blogger called Yaro Starak at his website Entrepreneur’s Journey. Yaro provides the following detailed definition: “A pillar is blog content, usually an article, which does some very important things: * It will bring in a rush of new readers and backlinks (other sites linking to your blog). * It will continue to bring in more readers over time as you and other people refer to it, even though it may be buried in the archives of your blog. * Eventually it will bring in traffic from search engines (this is largely because so many other web pages link to it). * You can list it in a separate area (like an articles page) with all your other pillars so your best content can easily be accessed and your value clearly demonstrated. * It is not time dependent, so in twelve months’ time it will still be relevant and popular.” Why Is Pillar Content Important? Looking at the bigger picture, pillar content is your foundation of your Internet business as it will continue to bring consumers and readers to your website. You may think that just having a product or service to sell is all that’s needed to run a successful business. Not quite so. Consumers today are very hungry for information and want to know more about your business. Therefore providing pillar content relating to your products or services can add value for your consumers and generate more sales for you. For example, if I were selling a watch online and it had a description and listed features, it may not be enough for a consumer to purchase the watch from my site. Reason being, most people would want to read reviews from others who have purchased this watch and see their feedback. What if I wrote an article about the watch talking about the history and make of it and asked an expert to state their opinion, and had other consumers respond with comments and feedback. Then this would provide social proof and adds value to your product without the consumer leaving your site and spending time looking for more information elsewhere. Examples Of Pillar Content Most pillar content articles are longer than 500 words and have lots of practical tips or advice. There are many different forms of pillar content you can create and I have listed some examples below for you to apply to your industry: 1. How To Article - shows people how to do a certain task or instructions on building something 2. Definition Article - defines a term in your industry 3. Present A Theory Or Argument - writing to present some unique thought 4. Release A Significant Resource - a report, podcast, video 5. A “List” Article - it’s very easy to scan and share. Can be a top 10 list or action points 6. Technical Or Visual Guide - a screen capture presentation or how to fix something using a video presentation. It is also a very detailed step by step blueprint on exactly how to complete a task. Pillars I’ve seen how effective pillar content can be for any Internet business and I recommend you have at least 10 pillar articles on your website before marketing to consumers. That way you’ll provide them with something valuable to read and also gain their interest to come back again. If you can write an article each day using the above examples, then you can build a very strong foundation for your Internet business. Tyrone Shum Pillar Article Writer
