Employers: Embrace the part time/ interim work force

In my previous blog post titled Employers: Are you ready, the future recruitment landscape? I made references to the different views that the population has to work and the aging population, 2010 and beyond.

There are great people, with great skills, that will be great for your business; however, they may want to work part-time, flexi-time, fixed-term contract, reduced contract, or full time. Project Resource has acknowledged this and several of our team work in this manner, which works for them, and works for us. For example, our experienced Non-Executive Directors John O'Sullivan and Phil Holt both work part-time for us, and Claire Light our Client Services Manager, and Karen Ingram our Internal Recruiter both work 4 day weeks, as this suits their life and we have worked hard to incorporate this into our business. Does your company take the same view? Do you have staff working in a part-time or interim or freelance capacity?

Some points for employers to consider:

• demand for flexible working patterns by both workers and employers is set to gather pace in the coming years and will play a greater role in the employment relationship;

• the predominant employment relationship of the future will be the same as now, between employers and employees;

• consequently, negotiating flexible working patterns may become key; and

• while part-time working will continue to grow, the relatively stable trends in full-time employment will demand even more innovative approaches to achieving flexibility in the workplace.

My Mentor My Mentor - I do have a mentor, it's my boss at my full time job! He hired me as a part timer 4 years ago and at that time I was a stay at home mom returning to the work force after 17 years of raising 3 kids! Two years after he hired me, I went full time and without his knowledge, advice, guidance over the last 4 years I may not have gotten as far as I am today. (Note: I said not [u:3eacidhz]as far[/u:3eacidhz]) But I would have gotten here regardless, he just helped speed the process! I'm happy at my full time position and now I'm also running a small business on the side and helping my husband (when I can) with his home based business as well as helping to moderate here on Evan Charmichael! I don't think i've done too bad in 4 years!
Re: Entrepreneur Competition Re: Entrepreneur Competition -
It doesn't have to be a SEO competition. I liked the idea because it's easy to monitor who is winning and it can be tracked. I love the idea of doing something with a marketing / business plan - how can we track it so everyone can see who is winning? It should be something as easy as the search engine challenge.[/quote:onrvj2s5] Yes, I understand what your saying. How about this, at interim times, the contestants must upload a certain portion of their business plan to the website, where it is rated by the masses? The final product can be evaluated by a judge panel. 60% of the total score could be evaluated by the expert judges on the final product, and the remaining 40% could be rated by the community when the portions are uploaded to the website at the interim points. For example, on Feb 19th the contestants send in their Operations Plan, which will be scored by the community, followed by the rest of the plan at interim points. Once the final and complete business plan is sent in, the judge panel evaluates the finished product and gives their input. After the community and judges have finished marketing the plans, the winners are announced. Let me know your thoughts.
Re: Personality Not Included Re: Personality Not Included -
Hi Shri, Is this business book about developing your company's brand image or your own? Should an entrepreneur always market themselves as the driving force behind their business? Don't a lot of small business owners like to remain anonymous because they want to appear larger than a "one person show"?[/quote:1lqypk3c] I would figure everyone has their own take on your questions. But, the book is about creating a personality for the business - any size business. It also points out very well how a business can falter without a distinct and positive personality. Awesome reading for any business owner or manager. I highlighted MANY points and will read it again to reinforce the points. Focusing on the owner's expertise doesn't mean they are a "one man show". They can be viewed as the "driving force" behind the business. I just saw an ad that sparked this idea. Take for example the law firm that Johnnie Cochran owned before his death. He was a big part of the brand for the company and was the driving force who molded the direction that the company took - but, he was certainly not a one man show. Shri
Re: How To Use Free Promotions For Your Internet Business? Re: How To Use Free Promotions For Your Internet Business? - David makes a good point here, there are many internet marketers who are trying to build their businesses part time and internet marketing is a pretty time consuming job if you want to do it for free or very little cost. I think that one needs to work out the amount of capital they have to invest in their business versus the time constraints they have and then outsource some of the tasks that consume the major part of their time. Re: The Da Vinci Method Re: The Da Vinci Method - Hey Julie, I haven't read the book either, but I can certainly relate with the entrepreneur personality of having short bursts of energy. I get this way a lot. I'll go full force for a short period of time doing a certain task, then I get tired of it and look for something else to occupy my time, or just do nothing at all. This process repeats itself throughout the day. I always thought that maybe I was just being lazy and that I needed to work hard for 8 - 10 hours straight. Although, at times I do feel that way because it's hard to get anything done otherwise.
