How to have a great CV!

There is loads of information on the internet about CV writing, be it the CV format/ layout, CV length, CV tips and all manner of other guidance. I thought I would give you my quick thoughts on the matter, which I hope helps you.

I started in recruitment in 1996, I have supplied contract/ interim and permanent staff to the Construction, Civil Engineering, Infrastructure and IT industries, and I believe I have enough experience to talk with authority on this matter. This is in no way meant to be an exhaustive, all encompassing article, just a few tips I hope you will find useful.

I am in the process of creating a video help guide to assist job seekers put together the best CV they can for them, I thought I would give a few pointers here. For more details, you can read our CV advice on our website.

How to have a great CV!

• Sell you. Your CV is the first impression a recruitment agency and/ or employer will judge you on and first impressions count. A good CV creates a good impression, a poor CV creates a poor impression.

• Make your CV easy to read, clear headings.

• Make your CV pleasing to the eye, bold or coloured headings can assist with this, and/ or spaced out text.

• Be concise, 2-3 pages is enough, make sure you summarise your skills, experiences and qualifications.

• Career summary, have your most current job first, then working backwards to your first job. If you have 20+ years experience, think, is the job you did 20 years ago relevant now.

• When summarising your career, highlight what you have done, your job role, and your responsibilities'. Employers what to understand your capabilities, what you can and cannot do, not what your team or company can do.

• Use headings, such as: professional profile, career summary, career objective, education and qualifications, professional training and development, IT skills, personal details, interests and activities, references.

• Include employer testimonials, snippets or quotes if you have these. These may be summaries of references you have received. In the internet age we now live, it is not too difficult to get an email quote highlighting your performance, integrity, professionalism, abilities, etc.

• Ensure you include all your contact details.

• Get advice from a recruiting professional, such as a recruitment consultant, HR professional, or a person that conducts interviews regularly. What is their advice? What improvements do they suggest?

• DO NOT refer to religion, politics or controversial hobbies/ interests.

I hope you found this CV advice useful.

Re: I Feel Really Great Today Because... - Hi David, I just feel great because it's Friday, full stop, it's great that you were able to get away at 10.30, I bet you were doing back flips leaving work, LOL. Another thing which you must feel great about is the knowledge that you don't rely 100% on your teaching salary which must be a great feeling, more power to you on that, regards, Mal.

Re: SCORE helps young entrepreneurs Re: SCORE helps young entrepreneurs - SCORE is a great resource. I thought it was an awesome idea the first time I heard about it. Its also a great way for retired business people to share their knowledge and experience with young people or other new entrepreneurs. They have lived the experience and can share the pros and cons along with the triumphs, setbacks, failures, etc. I also found a local university has a great program set up for students and people in the community. They had a great package of information for people, classes, resources and much more. Shri
Re: help wanted in u.k. Re: help wanted in u.k. - Hi Brendan, Your invention looks great - I got hooked on that youtube video you made! It looks like a great boxing training tool and if, as it appears, it really doesn't tangle up, it would seem to offer great potential. Have you thought about applying to appear on that TV programme (sorry, I have not been in the UK for a while and I forget its name) where people with business proposals put them to a panel of highly successful entrepreneurs. I have seen some absolute non-starters on that programme, but your invention is the sort of thing that would appeal, I'm sure. Also, it would look great if you got the chance to demonstrate it on national tv... and you might just browbeat the panelists into putting their money into it! Does anybody know the title of the TV programme I'm talking about???
