Make achieving goals a part of life
We all have goals in life, personal or professional, and we all want to achieve our goals with the minimum amount of fuss. However all too often we pursue goals that do not run parallel to the goals of the environment in which we find ourselves.
What I mean by this that we choose goals for ourselves that we have no opportunity to work towards as part of our day to day lives. This means that any progress we hope to make has to be made on our own, likely already stretched, time.
So how can we alleviate this? How can we make changes to our lifestyle that will help us to achieve our goals without having to pull another day a week out of a magic hat? The answer is surprisingly simple; it isn't a matter of working harder, simply being more efficient, and in my experience the best way to do this is to identify opportunities to incorporate your goals with your existing life. This can be applied to a wide range of goals from 'I want to be more assertive' or 'I want to be more organised' to 'I want to learn a new skill' or even 'I want to pursue a new career'.
Discuss your goals with your employer, see if you can identify areas within your existing role where you can work towards a goal you set for yourself. Alternatively, what new areas of responsibility might you be able to take on that would allow you the opportunity to develop your career in the direction you wish for it to go in. Remember though that your employer is trying to run a business and you are a valued resource in your current role, try to think of ways that you can add value to your role through your own personal development, an employer will be much more enthusiastic about you revising your role if it is of obvious benefit to them.
For example, I have a keen interest in web development but have little time outside of work to pursue this; having spoken with my employer I am now responsible for making minor updates to our website and to our newsletter template. By doing so I am adding value to my employers business by saving them money on outsourced development and pursuing my goals at the same time.
Over time you can parley this into a horizontal shift within your current organisation or as a springboard to launch yourself into a new career. Remember that prospective employers will always be more interested in skills developed in a work setting where you have gathered real experience as opposed to a training course where all your work is purely academic.
Working your goals into your everyday life doesn't have to be limited to professional goals either. At the start of 2009 I decided I wanted to improve my fitness, at the time I was taking the bus to work every day. I made the decision to start walking to work instead, and whilst certainly less comfortable didn't cost me a significant amount of time.
The point I hope I have made is that we can make great strides towards achieving our goals in life if we take the time to examine our lives and look for the opportunities to do so.
