2011 Office Spring Cleaning
After a harsh winter of snow, snow, and even more snow for
most of the country, it’s seems like everyone is looking forward to the spring
weather! Part of preparing for the new season is the usual spring
cleaning not only of one’s home, but also at the office. Besides the physical
cleaning that most everyone will undertake, Human Resources should take the
time to make sure software is up to date and to research possible upgrades in
office management. In this issue ofAstronology, we take a look
into the fun, and sometimes seemingly daunting task of office spring cleaning.
The Physical Spruce-Up
The career-advice blogJobaclegive these tips to
combat the winter germs that may have crept into your office over the winter
months:
- Clorox™ Wipes and Lysol™ Cans: These cleaners/disinfectants will kill whatever germs are possibly lurking, leaving the office with scent of “clean.”
- Clean that phone: Believe it or not, your phone is a hotbed for germs. Bust out the alcohol swabs to clean the phone handle as well as the ear and speaking parts.
- That keyboard/ mouse needs attention too: Canned air can get rid of any possible crumbs from eating at the desk as well as…dead skin. If you’re still using a mouse with a trackball use tweezers to remove dust build up on the trackball.
- Chairs need attention too: Make sure you clean according to the type of material the chair is, such as Febreeze™ for fabric chairs. Give the wheels, levels, and joints a quick spray of WD40™.
- File paperwork right away: Never underestimate the power of paper. What starts off as just one chart on your desk can quickly turn into a small mountain. To cut back on the clutter on the desk file all paperwork away as soon as possible.
- Get rid of unnecessary paperwork: Paperwork you don’t really need is taking up space. Be tough with yourself and take a look at all of your folders and files. If your paperwork needs to be shredded, or filed in storage, schedule a day to take care of such matters. Commit to it and actually take care of it. You’ll feel better with the reduction of paper around you.
Besides physically cleaning up your PC, make sure all software is up to date and that unnecessary files aren’t cluttering your desktop. File away all files in folders. Just as it’s important to file away physical paperwork, it’s just as important to organize your electronic desktop. It will make retrieving files a whole lot easier for you and for others if an emergency or other office panic ensues.PCWorld, technology review website, also suggests using automatic clean-ups to keep your computer clutter free.
