Preserving the Dignity of Our Workforce
|
| Guest post by: Jennifer Loftus |
Article Overview: We Americans celebrate Labor Day each September as a reminder of how those who toil daily are important to their families and to the country. I might offer to you that the first Monday in September is also Employers’ Day, for without employers, there are no employees. We in the human resource profession find ourselves in a no-man’s land as both an advocate for our employees and an instrument of our employers. Guest Writer Richard Virgilio explains.

Preserving the Dignity of Our Workforce
Our difficulty is a matter of finding the right balance: suggesting
policies, procedures, and compensation structures that encourage our
performing employees to stay, suitable non-employees to fill our
vacancies, and our non-performers to leave so as to increase our
organization’s productivity. We strive to foster a working environment
that encourages productivity and is one that our employees are willing,
if not eager, to return to.
It is the dignity of the individual member of our workforce that is a
key element of whether any of them stay, go, return, leave, or even
sign-on in the first place. When the employer treats one employee
shabbily, that employee likely becomes (pick one or more): a bad
example, a problem-child, an underperformer, a resource sink, etc. When
the employer treats the employee with dignity, even in environments
where the compensation may seem inadequate, the employee universally
responds with work, support, esprit-d’corps, encouragement, creativity, and a willingness to consider the employer’s point of view in difficult situations,
Dignity of the human person is a fundamental American value. Work –
the pathway for “the pursuit of happiness” listed in our Declaration of
Independence – is one of the basic ways individuals find worth and
dignity in their lives. How often when first meeting or introducing
another person, we include or turn to, “So, what do you do?” Or we
identify ourselves by our work. An unemployed individual reacts as
though he or she has lost that worth and dignity.
This dignity comes only from the inside; it’s a self-perception. No
person can give another dignity, but anyone can take it away from anyone
else – that makes it precious. And that very notion makes it incumbent
on us in the human resource profession to promote wise policies,
propose wise solutions, and counsel our organizational leadership to
consider the dignity of each employee with every workforce decision.
When we do, we make the employment relationship stronger and less
adversary. We can turn Labor Day into a two-way celebration, both
extolling the individual who works, who labors, and also recognize how
the employer’s role of preserving the laborer’s dignity makes it also
Employers’ Day.
