Anxiety - 5 Tips to Help Overcome It
Everyone knows what it’s like to feel anxious. We all have different triggers. Does your heart pound before you give a speech? Your stomach churn at exam time? Some people find walking into a room full of strangers makes them very nervous and they break into a sweat. These are normal reactions but should pass once the stressful situation is over. For some of us, anxiety doesn’t go away. It starts to interfere with, and even dominate our life. It may cause symptoms such as insomnia, stomach upsets, headaches and difficulty concentrating. Left untreated, anxiety may develop into depression. Whether your anxiety is mild or is seriously affecting your quality of life, it is never too late to take action. The good news is that anxiety is very treatable. There are steps you can take to reduce your anxiety; you will find some strategies below. If you are unable to make progress or your anxiety is robbing you of your enjoyment of life, you may benefit from the help of a skilled counsellor or psychologist to guide you towards recovery.
- Replace negative with positive thoughts. Every time you think a positive or negative thought you have an instant reaction on the feeling level. ‘Feed’ your mind with positive thoughts; they have a powerful effect on your state of mind, just as nutritious food does on your body. Replace “I don’t think I’ll go to the party” with “There’s no reason not to go. I might enjoy it!” You’ll gradually begin to feel more confident and optimistic. Relationships will start to improve. Thinking positively will extend to other areas of your life too, such as your work.
- Build your self-esteem. Use self-affirming messages like “I’m an OK person. I recognise my worth and value.” Be your own best friend. Treat yourself with kindness. Explore keys to build self-esteem that will give you more confidence. Read books on the subject to extend your thinking and use your car as a rolling university by listening to self-help tracks.
- Compartmentalise. Focus on one thing or problem at a time rather than let your mind get cluttered by trying to deal with too many issues. Tell yourself that you only have to meet the needs of the moment in which you exist.
- Daily exercise. Regular exercise is essential for the maintenance of good health and to induce feelings of well-being. Don’t give into excuses such as “I don’t feel up to it”, or “I haven’t got time”. Exercise changes blood chemistry in a beneficial way and will help the anxious or depressed person relax by breaking physical and mental tension. Start gradually if you haven’t exercised for a while. The choice of exercise is up to you. A half-hour brisk walk and some stretches might appeal to you, or perhaps a swim in the local pool.
- Relaxation. Learning the skill of relaxation enables us to be far more in touch with ourselves. Once people have learnt how to relax and are putting it into daily practice, they very often experience an increased feeling of well-being. They will feel more energetic and mentally alert. They may feel that they are coping better with everything. If you are feeling wound up, it may be quite difficult to relax at first. Using a relaxation CD to guide you will help you master the skill. Practise two or three times daily to begin with. You will soon notice the benefits and will look forward to the special time you’ve set aside just for you.
