Overcome that Negative Attitude: Revamp your Mind
Are there things about yourself you'd like to change? I don't mean your hair colour, your car or your love of chocolate! What I'm talking about is your attitude, or mindsets that are holding you back. Perhaps you've heard yourself say or think things such as, 'I won't try ten-pin bowling - I'm hopeless at ball games and will just make a fool of myself' or I have the skills, but there's no point in applying for that job because there are lots of people more qualified than I am'. At times we all have doubts about our abilities or want to change self-limiting behaviours. That's easier said than done' I hear you say. But trust me, if you really want to change the way you function, you can! It is easy to continue acting and thinking in the way we always have, but if we really want to move forward we often need a little structure (a tool we can work with) to help us do so.
I'm going to share a valuable tip with you. I have used it myself, and it works.
How to revamp your mind
There's a written exercise we can use to revamp our conscious thinking which will help us make the changes we need to in order to function well.
When I've needed to make changes within and do a bit of fine-tuning, reprogramming if you like, I 'get it down on paper'. When we write something out we are usually serious about it. It's like making a contract-to-ourselves, therefore we will be more committed to it. It usually extends our thinking as well.
Write down an attitude or behaviour you wish to change, for instance, one that is eating away at your self-esteem. Perhaps it's the habit of undermining yourself to others, or putting yourself down in your thinking.
Write out how and why you think this attitude developed. Did it come from influences in your childhood? Were you treated in such a way that you formed a fairly negative picture of yourself and your own capabilities? Write out examples of how it came about if you want. You don't have to do this if you prefer not to; it is your choice. It is enough that you write WHY you think you developed this mindset about yourself, and/or why you act as you do in certain situations.
Write out the advantages to you personally of correcting this negative mindset/behaviour. How do you think you will benefit from acting, (or thinking) in a different way about yourself? What will be the major advantages to you? List them all. How will changing this attitude/action affect you on the feeling level? Will it enhance your overall quality of life? Once you start writing along these lines you may be surprised at how much you come up with. You are doing this part of the exercise to convince yourself of the value of putting the next part into practice.
Next, write out what practical steps you need to take in order to do the necessary corrective work on yourself. If it is a behaviour that needs changing, write the precise steps you are going to take to change it, and then follow through on them, starting from today. If it is a thought process/attitude you wish to change, write a positive replacement thought (or thoughts) you will feed into your mind when you catch yourself going down the negative track.
Highlight in coloured pen the practical corrective steps you have written. Display this exercise where you can look at it daily. Maybe inside your wardrobe door, and put into practice what you have promised yourself to do in the above exercise. Immediately correct yourself every time you slip back into the old way of thinking or functioning. You will forget sometimes, but if you stick with it, in as little as three weeks you will have a breakthrough, even though it may only be a small one.
Keep reinforcing your new way of operating from this point onwards. It is from simple but consistent steps like this that we do the revamping we all need - AND get the results.
Read aloud what you have committed to do to reprogramme yourself.
This reinforces the new message you are locking into your subconscious.
Do this daily if you can, until you begin to notice a difference. It will speed up the revamping process.
