Interviewing Job Applicants: More Powerful with a Results-Oriented Job Description

Guest post by: Roger Plachy

Article Overview: Interviewing job applicants takes time, and can be legally dangerous. You can solve both problems by keeping the conversation firmly rooted in job requirements as presented in a job description. More than just reviewing basic skills, with a Results-Oriented Job Description that focuses on expected results, you can develop a conversation that probes analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Interviewing Job Applicants: More Powerful with a Results-Oriented Job Description

Hiring a good employee starts with a thorough interview of experience, attitude, and problem-solving ability. Unfortunately, many interviewers ramble around an unstructured conversation.

Using a job description as the base for questions and comments focuses attention on essential job requirements and minimizes emphasis on personality or irrelevant issues. Sticking to job-specific questions is the best safeguard against illegal questions.

Even when interviewers use a guided interview form, unless that form incorporates the job description as the centerpiece, attention can slide into non-essential issues.

Not all job descriptions are equally useful, however. A duties- or task-oriented job description only gets you through the basics. A Results-Oriented Job Description that focuses on desired outcomes is better because it aims attention at testing an applicant’s talents at analyzing and pursuing necessary results.

As an example of the way to use a job description when interviewing job applicants, here is the Job Interview Guide for a waiter/waitress. You’ll find seven standard questions following each major job result to ask when examining a candidate’s qualifications.

Of course, additional questions will depend on the candidate’s responses. And, when team interviewing, using a job-based structured approach ensures that all interviewers will approach the interview from the same orientation.

A good screening process for new hires A good screening process for new hires - Another good screening method is the one McDonalds uses for its new employees. Applicants are subjected to two interviews (i.e. the first one by an assistant manager and the second by the store manager) and they have a "Crew Trainer" work with them for his/her first 3 shifts, each one being only 3 hours in duration. And at the end of the training period, an evaluation is done on the new hire and if he/she passes, there's a 6 month probation period before he/she is considered an "official" employee with full benefits (e.g. granted an employee card that allows them to get 50% off their meals at any McDonalds store location). And during the probation period, new hires are evaluated multiple times by various senior staff members (to ensure there's no biased performance reviews).
Re: Book Review - The Freedom Formula Re: Book Review - The Freedom Formula - Hi Shri, Thanks for your input. I have read a bit of the book. Now I say something which many may know, true freedom comes from the true source of Freedom. We read this in Luke 4v17-18. ......has sent me to proclaim freedom for the....proclaim of the Lord's favor. Later it reads, the people were amazed. She mentions God, but what about his son Jesus, who died and rose again. Jesus. Powerful. More and more people asking questions, why are we here and what is the purpose for our life. All the answers are in the Bible, which stands for Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. A very successful guy in the US is Joel Osteen from Houston Texas, with over 40'000 people meeting every week. He has written a book: "Your Best Life Now" Well worth reading, too. Regards Beat
Re: Search Engine Optimization Re: Search Engine Optimization -

Just curious as to what others are doing to optimize their websites. I have received a page rank 5 from google which is very good in my line of business in comparison to my competition. I am still not coming close to being on the first page for main key word searches though, even though all of the websites ahead of me have a smaller page rank. Does anyone know how this works and what I can focus on? Thanks![/quote:2p2i4nbc] What you have done is amazing. 6 Months to a page rank of 5 is great. How did you do it?[/quote:2p2i4nbc] Hi there, John Alexander here. I agree, that if you have a Google page rank of 5, that is great (as far as PR goes.)Keep in mind that while PR does have benefits, it has little to do with where your page actually shows up in the search results. Having a PR of 3 or higher is fine, but I would not get too obsessed with it. One of the benefits of a higher PR is that the robots will visit you more often and another benefit is they will tend to stay longer on your pages and also dig a little deeper. But when it comes to where you show up within the search results, you must remember that Google (or none of the search engines grade on an absolute scale. What that means is that how difficult or how easy it is to get your page coming to the top depends totally on how competitive your competitive landscape is. The more competition there is for a specific phrase, then the more you have to do some work to compete. One of the best ways to begin is to look for any errors that are easy to fix. Are you using any dynamic pages that may cause the search engines to loop into a spider trap? Always remember, for any design challenge there are multiple ways to fix a problem. Is there any duplication in your Meta Description tags or Meta Title Tag? I only ask, because many times I see this one in Web sites where people are not aware of how important it is for each Title and each description to be unique. By that I mean each Title should relate to what is actually relevant to the page. Same with the Meta Description. This error is so common, that I often see that once people understand and fix the problem, (easy to fix) they quickly lose any duplicate content penalty and sometimes can increase their traffic by 20% to as much as 50% once Google sees them as unique and relevant. I know this is fairly basic, but if you star with the easy things to fix, it can bring you much better focus to your pages and you want every page on your site to be like an information rich gateway to attract many new readers. Then as you learn more and more advanced methodology, because the basics are right, they ultimately will carry you through and keep your pages performing in a stable way. I hope that helps a bit. Remember, doing good keyword research combined with only mild optimization can make you money.

It is so amazing that the first book to be published on earth could not be believed by many. Success Strategies Success Strategies - How to get the results you want now? Success Strategies and Action Steps I have used are: The Power of Choice Where you are at this present moment, is exactly perfect from the choices you have made. If you want to be somewhere else, you have to decide clearly what that is (your goal/outcome) and create action steps to achieve this. The Power of Focus The book "The Power of Focus" by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and Les Hewitt, is one of my treasures in my Entrepreneur Library. If you focus on what you want versus what you do not want, your conscious and sub-conscious mind will direct attention to this. The movie, What the Bleep, Down the Rabbit Hole, explains this in detail about quantum physics and what we create in our lives. The Power of Commitment This is not about commitment to others. The first step is the commitment, your word, you make to yourself. Accountability and responsibility are additional success strategies and ingredients to creating the success, defined by you, that you want. The commitment to others reflects your integrity, your word and the team you work with. Co-workers, clients, yoru family, friends and community.
