They are age-old management questions: how to motivate employees for higher productivity and how to get them to produce over and beyond established goals without busting the budget. Fortunately, there are several solutions. We must remember that while employees need money to survive, they often are motivated by other elements in the workplace. As humans, we all have different motivators. In my consulting practice, I've found that - besides money - there are eight primary employee needs which, when satisfied, become motivators for higher productivity. When management can determine and then best satisfy its employees' needs, it will create a process that promotes productivity without going over budget. Following are the eight needs with some tips on how to best use them to motivate.

One of the latest "techniques for success" is the personal mission statement. Motivational and management gurus say these can be as effective in our own lives as they are in organizations. The real question is, how well do they really work in organizations? So often, after all the committees have fiddled with these statements, they end up as vague, watered-down platitudes that are quickly forgotten. So does that spell success, for either organizations or for us personally?

I've found the most adaptive people to change often are entrepreneurs, whether they are inside or outside organizations. Either as independent business people or corporate executives, they react quickly to change and they have a "next" (what's next) mentality. They seem to have certain attitudes and behaviors that allow them to "roll with the punches" and take advantage of changing situations. When change occurs - whether good or bad - they nearly always land on their feet. For them, change truly is interesting.
