Research conducted by the Corporate Leadership Council1 in 2005 showed that, while the presence or absence of a development plan seems to have no impact on motivation or retention of highly talented employees, the quality of a development plan (if present) in terms of being customised to the individual and being achievable has a large impact on motivation and retention.
