Health insurance Health insurance - And as far as unplanned expenses, I'd like to suggest that everybody go right out and get health insurance if you don't have it already. As well as long-term disability insurance. Regardless of whether you run your own business or not, you simply can't afford to be without health insurance.
Your own illness over business Your own illness over business - Along with "major" problems with family members, another concern is your own health. Last week I was sicker'n a dog for two days, and lost a lot of time that I could ill afford. Since I'm an entrepreneur, all on my own, I had no one who could pick up the slack on my many projects. And I don't have long term health insurance, for if I'm involved in a car wreck, etc. (Knock on wood that doesn't happen.) But when you're the only one in your business, your health, and your health insurance, are important factors to consider.
Preparing for the worst - long Preparing for the worst - long - These forums exist to help entrepreneurs start and successfully maintain their businesses, but I thought I'd get in a thread about entrepreneurs protecting their families should the unexpected happen, and they pass on in a car crash, plane crash, natural or man-made catastrophe. No one expects to die - even old folks! - but especially not young, healthy, strong folk like most of us here. But, as is evident any time you read the news...stuff happens. So, what happens to [i:4atezzia]your [/i:4atezzia]family if you die? Or are seriously injured...or if your house is leveled by fire or flood? Do you have a will? Does your will state who in your family is to get what, so that there will be absolutely no argument come probate time? Better to get everything in writing so that there will be no bad feelings when the time comes. Do you have insurance, including long-term disability insurance? If you've got a family, this is something you need to have, even if you have to scrimp and save to pay the premiums. Same goes for funeral insurance. Funerals are very expensive, and your family shouldn't have to come up with that money on their own when they're busy trying to grieve. What will happen to your business if you die? Is there enough money to pay your creditors? Will your family be able to figure out who your creditors are? Where your stocks and bonds are? And so on. We're living in an increasingly uncertain world. Preparing for the future is imperative.
Giving Gifts Giving Gifts - In my business, I don't call it gifts, I call it premiums. Best time I give a premium is when I'm trying to close a tough sale, and the client is stuck on the fence. What I do is throw in a free 3 day 2 night stay in choice hotels in Las Vegas, or Orlando. Normally that will be just enough to win them over, but it doesn't work all the time.
Re: Do entrepreneurs have benefit coverage? Re: Do entrepreneurs have benefit coverage? - [quote="OmnivoreInk":20rus3mw]I'm surprised this topic hasn't gotten more play. It is very dangerous for people to not have health insurance, dental insurance, etc., yet those of us who are self-employed have a tendency to not buy it because we can't afford it. I, for example, don't have any coverage of any kind. But, I'm reasonably healthy, have no kids who need coverage, etc. Perhaps a better question would be - if you don't have coverage, why not? Too expensive? You're superstitious, etc?[/quote:20rus3mw] Hi Barbara, Well I live in Ontario, so I already have free health insurance (OHIP)... but I don't have any dental coverage and I have to pay for my own drugs/medication, etc. To answer your question, I guess the reason I don't have any additional coverage is that I just don't know where to start. For instance, what's a good company to buy a plan from?
