21st Century / AIG Insurance Company - Car Insurance Coverage

AIG is is an international corporation with more than $14 billion in assets. It offers car insurance coverage through its operations of personal lines including the massive marketing division AIG Direct, the Agency Auto Division and through the well known 21st Century Group Insurance company. AIG (American Insurance Group) owns 61% of 21st Century Insurance. The American Insurance Group (AIG) has an AA++ rating by Best Insurance Reports and a superior rating by A.M. Best. The rating is based on a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the firm's overall operating performance, business profile and the strength of its balance sheet.

However, an independent National Auto Safety consumer survey conducted by JD Powers in 2010, showed that AIG's 21st Century car insurance provider had an overall customer satisfaction rating of less than average. Its ability to contact its policyholders also received a below average rating. When customers were asked about the kinds of polices offered, payment and billing and pricing they rated these services about average.

Another independent survey on AIG's customer satisfaction had similar results. Participants were asked "How satisfied are you with your insurance company?" and 47% said that they were "very unsatisfied". Consumers also were asked what are the chances of them renewing their insurance with AIG and 54% responded with "definitely not". In addition, the survey inquired as to whether or not they would recommend AIG to their friends and 55% replied "definitely not". Most of the surveyed individuals (52%) had been with this insurance carrier for more than 3 years.

In contrast, a smaller yet profitable auto insurance company Amica Mutual, had a "among the best" rating in overall customer satisfaction and in every other category. The largest US insurance company for car insurance coverage State Farm, was rated "better than most" in overall customer satisfaction, payment and billing and contacting its policyholders.
