Dental Insurance Plans
People are generally pretty diligent about purchasing health care insurance, but often don't think about dental insurance until they are having tooth pain and realize how expensive dental care can be. It also highlights the advantages of good preventive dental care.
Dental insurance does not have to be expensive. There are many good dental insurance plans as well as discount dental plans available for an individual to purchase, even without having to purchase health insurance.
The best way to keep from having dental pain is to get regular dental check-ups and to practice preventive dental care. Most dental insurance plans that are offered through insurance companies whose primary business is health insurance will understand how good dental care contributes to good health. Bacteria in the mouth resulting from poor dental hygiene can lead to health problems as the bacteria are swallowed. Studies show that there can be a link between poor dental hygiene and increased potential for heart attacks and strokes.
Dental Insurance Coverage
•Comprehensive dental exams and check-ups twice a year which are a good way to spot any potential problems before they become major issues.
•Dental cleanings to remove plaque from teeth that can turn into tartar which can cause gum disease.
•X-rays to check for cavities and gum disease
•Cavity fillings
•Sealants for back teeth that can be hard to reach and clean.
Fluoride treatments are also available as they prevent the development of cavities.
Dental insurance coverage will include root canals, coverage for crowns and dentures, and even treatment for periodontal disease.
Types of Dental Insurance Plans
There are different options for purchasing dental insurance plans.
Traditional Dental Insurance Plan - these are plans that allow the insured individual to access care from any dentist, and the insurance company reimburses the dentist based on usual, customary, and reasonable fees. Any difference between what the insurance pays and what the dentist charges will be paid by the insured individual. The insured individual should always check to see if the dentist they are selecting accepts the insurance company payments. Not all dental providers participate with all insurance companies. These freedom-of-access dental plans are generally the most expensive types of insurance plans.
Managed Care Dental Insurance Plans - dental plans that have a list of participating providers will usually be less expensive than the traditional dental insurance option, but the insured individual has to use a primary care dentist from the list of participating dental providers. The primary care dentist provides all normal dental care, and will refer the insured individual to a specialist that is participating in the insurance plan when necessary. These types of managed care plans limit the freedom of the insured individual to see any dentist they desire, but the cost savings can be significant.
Preferred Provider Dental Insurance Plans - this type of dental insurance plan also has a list of participating dentists, and if the insured individual chooses to see a dentist outside of the participating panel they may do so, but coverage of the cost will be reduced. The cost differential can be significant, so the insured individual should always have a good understanding about what the financial obligation could be if they go out of network.
Purchasing Dental Insurance Plans
Dental insurance plans can be purchased as part of health insurance plans, or as stand-alone plans. There are many different options available, so shopping around always pays off. There are also discounted dental plans that just offer discounts off services and are not considered insurance plans. Always check with the local Insurance Commissioner to ensure that the dental insurance plan selected is licensed.
