Health Insurance for Teachers

While teachers may seem to occupy the perfection job; a cushy pension, a solid and rewarding career and employer provided health insurance, the professionals in charge of educating America's young mind are facing a sobering reality regarding health care and insurance. Sadly, the premiums in teacher health insurance have risen a shocking 59% over the last few years, forcing many educationists to branch out for health insurance to find the coverage that used to be guaranteed as a thank you for their service to the community and the country as a whole. Many U.S. educators are choosing to remain with their current health insurance plans provided as a benefit from the school district. While not all teachers are faced with sky-rocketing premiums and heavy out-of-pocket costs, many have had to shoulder the surplus costs of health insurance in order to cover extra costs and cuts in the district's shrinking budget. The reasons behind this distressing reality vary; advances in medical technology has paved the road to measures that are exorbitantly expensive, causing providers and insurance companies to raise their premiums to cover the mounting costs. The current trajectory of health care reform will attempt to form a limit to these peaking premiums and hold insurance companies, even group health insurance, liable for the augment in out-of-pocket costs.

All of this confusing, and sometimes conflicting information has left American educators with a huge dilemma. Many are faced with a difficult choice; yield a higher paying wage in order to keep current health insurance benefits, or, retain the higher pay and divvy out more money to combat with health care costs and higher insurance expenses. The choices can be daunting, but, teachers do have options.

* Get Individual Health Insurance: Sometimes group insurance is not always the best choice for teachers. While group insurance has, and in some cases continues, to promise competitive rates, and solid coverage, individual health insurance can offer some benefits as well. Some individual health insurance companies offer amazing benefit, a more affordable price and less out-of-pocket cost. Be sure to read the fine print and ensure the specific policy being examined includes the benefits, prescriptions and doctors that relate to your specific situation.

* Health insurance and Life insurance: There are some cases where special discounts are given when policies are purchased together. Many insurance companies will offer a significant reduction of total price, or a special package with lower premiums and other out-of-pocket costs if a life insurance policy is purchased at the same time. Again, check into any policy exclusions, provider information and preferred physicians to ensure the package contains what you will need.

* Family Health Insurance: This form of insurance can offer good deals in health insurance for teachers and their families. These plans offer policies for multiple users and are a great choice for instructors with a spouse, and/or children who might require health care insurance. With more than one policy, many insurance plans and terms become more negotiable and the price can be settled to offer a better overall rate for the entire family.

Teachers face some tough choices in health care coverage, but as the reform on health continues to develop, new choices and options will continue to open up. As with any policy, whenever attempting or looking into change, be sure to examine all the situations, exclusions, additions, out-of-pocket cost, prescription plans, and ask lots of questions to ensure the insurance companies are working toward the best arrangement for you and any affected family members.
