How To Control Health Insurance Costs
During a time were the economy is suffering and the recession has forced employers to dispatch their premium increases to employees and replace policies with higher deductibles and copayments, consumers are clamoring to find methods and techniques to control insurance costs.
Even with health care reform commencing, family insurance coverage increased an average of $14,000. Yet, even with the augment of insurance premiums and policy costs on the rise, there are ways to save and control the money spent on health insurance.
One immediate way to save money is to compare and contrast various insurance companies. The health reform has forced many insurance companies to compete and vie for consumer business. Look into contending insurance companies and compare price, benefits, premium and policies in order to find the best deal. You may find an insurance company that can offer better rates or lower premiums. Be aware of the fine print; changing insurance companies may require a change in physicians, so be aware of all the policy changes that could ensue.
Another way to decrease overall insurance costs are to divvy out more out-of-pocket money. Many times, higher deductible plans offer special health saving plans and can cut premiums by over 18% in the long run. There are also plans that will offer to waive the deductible for office visits, preventative action and prescriptions. It may sound odd, but the higher the deductible, the lower the overall cost of the insurance plan.
Being aware of your prescriptions is another money saving tip. When filling a prescription, be sure to ask your pharmacist about the availability and cost reduction of opting to get the generic form of drug, bypassing the more expensive brand name. Additionally, partaking in a wellness program can stop illness in their tracks. Maintaining personal health can take a big chunk out of high health insurance prices, lower out-of-pocket expenses and completely wipe out the need for prescriptions. A good health track record will also keep insurance rates low once a policy has been secured.
Considering the insurance plans required for individual family members may also save money. Sometimes it costs less to insure specific family members under a different health insurance plan. Age is a key factor in insurance plans and young dependents, or older parents and/or grandparents may save large sums of money on a different insurance plan.
Considering a health Savings Account can also offer money saving options. An HAS permits you to save money in a tax-protected account that you may extract money from to pay medical expenses. Because this plan works best with a higher deductible health care plan, you are afforded lower premiums and the saving you accumulate reduce the possibility of not being able to cover unforeseen medical bills.
Another option for those yearning to cut down on insurance plan costs is to look into government assistance health programs. While many people are aware of these government programs, most consumers are unacquainted with the fact that many states offer programs for those substantial over the poverty level in addition to lower-income families. Most times, this assistance is in the form of a subvention that will aid in paying a portion of the premiums for conventional health services. You never know until you look into it, and these programs can offer major money saving options for most American families.
There are many creative and realistic options for saving money on health insurance. The best option is to do your homework, branch out and examine other policies and alternatives, look into government assisted programs, examine your current policy and deductible options and go over saving plan opportunities. Reexamine individual family members and make sure there are not better insurance options for particularized people within your household. Many times, this is an option we have not considered. Remain diligent in your efforts and be aware of the changing health policies going on in the background.
