Moving/Relocating: Updating Your Insurance After A Move

There is so much involved in moving. Many people fail to think of the task involving letting their auto insurance company know that they have moved. The truth is that it is necessary to alert your car insurance carrier of a new address after you move. Why this is the case and what is involved with it are outlined in the following paragraphs. Why Insurance Companies Have to Know A New Address

Car insurance companies figure up insurance rates in large part based on where you live. Their actuarial tables are heavily based on this. These tables show them the chances of a car accident or theft of vehicle occurring in a given zip code. This means that a move will result in a change of your insurance rates. If you move out of state, it could be a significant change.

Out of State Moves and Updating Insurance

Out of state moves present additional complications that require insurance updates. First of all, the laws for insurance requirements are different in every single state. It is unlikely that the car insurance minimum coverages are identical. Even if they are, laws and rules overseeing car insurance companies are not. There are states that do not permit insurance companies to give their clients discounts for customer loyalty. The whole law can prove to be completely different too. Should you be moving to another state that has no fault rules, you might have to obtain a whole new insurance policy. Insurance agents will know what the differences are between one state's law and another state's.

Another thing to consider is that not all car insurance companies provide coverage in multiple states. Many of them will not offer such coverage for a driver in a different state. In this case, more than simply alerting your insurance company will be required. You would have to get an entirely different insurance provider in advance of the move. It is critical that you have coverage in the new state before you start driving there. This will require that you talk with both the old insurance company and the new one as part of the transition. The goal is to allow the former policy to expire as soon as the newer one has taken effect. This stops an insurance lapse of coverage from happening.

Notifying a Leasing Company

Finally, for any person who is leasing a car, there are other requirements when insurance is updated. The leasing company must be alerted to the change in insurance. Much of the time, the insurance agent will be able to handle this on your behalf.

Re: Management Processes? Re: Management Processes? - Great question Aaron. Like you and Kevin have indicated, we can get a lot done by creating a management process. I like to: Prioritize what I need to do in order of importance. Pick the top priority item. Brainstorm possible tasks. Pick a task and complete it. Move on to the next task. I find this helps break things down into manageable pieces. It also helps just to take small actions. [Link removed by forum admin]
