The Uninsured: Don't Fall Through The Cracks
As the overhaul on the U.S. healthcare care state of affairs reaches a boiling point, claiming headlines, forming heated disputes, and having the average citizen on the edge of his or her seat in an attempt to understand new policy and weed out the facts from the fiction, the war for better health insurance wages on. Yet, as many Americans struggle to get a better perception of the impending changes, there is still an overwhelming number of people who have yet to possess the benefits of health insurance and continue to leave illnesses untreated, struggle with chronic ailments, pay over priced prescription fees and attempt to budget doctor visits in for their children. In one of the riches countries in the world, how are so many Americans forced to forgo basic medical health insurance.
In 2009 there were over 50 million Americans who did not have the benefits of owning health care insurance. There is a common misconception that only those who are unemployed lack this basic medical necessity, yet, sadly this is not the case.
Statistics have shown that most insured Americans consist of two parent families, where at least one individual works full-time. For most people, it simply boils down to one crystal clear fact: affordability. Many of these families make too much money to file for government assistance programs, yet not enough to afford costly premiums for family members. Thus, hey are forced to decline health insurance plans and live without health care entirely. While there are programs like Medicare that offer coverage to the elderly, most uninsured are under the age of 65, and make less than $20,000 a year. These individuals believe there is not an option for health care, and they have fallen through the cracks, subjected to preventable illnesses, costly doctor appointments, and credit problems and in extreme cases, medical bankruptcy.
There is hope for everyone. By getting involved in the current health care reform and making the opinions and situations of the uninsured known, steps can be taken to ensure all Americans have the opportunity to have affordable insurance. The current trajectory of the health care reform has aimed at offering health care insurance for those who have previously been unable to afford insurance or have been rejected because of preexisting conditions. Health insurance companies will have to compete for the business of the average consumer, putting the people in charge of selecting and paying a more affordable price for health care coverage. Insurance companies will be held accountable for rejections and will be unable to brazenly raise the costs of out-of-pocket expenses and increase premiums because of shady business practices. Health care insurance can be affordable for everyone. Examine current individual insurance policies, taking into account prescriptions, doctors, emergency room visits and other medical requirements unique to your situation. There are wonderful insurance options available. Don’t fall through the cracks; invest in your health and your future and through diligent research affordable health insurance is right within your grasp.
