Learning how to learn

To innovate yourself, learning how to learn becomes critical. As we get entrenched in the routine of our life we have fewer powerful opportunities to learn how to learn, unlike children who are constantly learning completely new things. We also become more resistant to trying new things because we are afraid to do them badly which is a requirement of learning and doing something completely new. I have found some of the most impacting experiences for learning how to learn involve doing completely new and different physical activities. For instance, I play volleyball, table tennis, and badminton. Trying another sport I have never played that involves a ball and a net won’t be a stretch or too significant of a learning opportunity for me. However, trying something completely different like ice skating or kayaking would be. The environment is completely different, you are on ice or water! The movements your body makes to propel you are also completely different. I took up both ice skating and kayaking recently in my life. In addition to some new hobbies, I learned a lot about how to learn. I learned how to start something completely different and how to do it successfully. I learned to accept doing it badly at first. I learned to observe others to see how they do it. I learned to ask for advice. I learned to try new ways of doing it to see what works for me. I learned to break the movements down into parts. I learned to reflect on the process. I learned to learn how to do it. If you can do these things you will always be successful in your career in this rapidly changing world where learning new things is required at an accelerating rate.

Re: How John Chow Makes $40,000/mo from blogging - My point of view is this... If he is making more money than me then I can probably learn something from him. If he has more traffic than me I can probably learn something. If he can build a strong community of tens of thousands of loyal followers then I can probably learn something from him. If he's managed to do something I've yet to do or haven't had success with then I can probably learn something from him. etc. I agree he's not the best source of info on marketing, and he pushes aff. stuff heavily, but just the fact he does this tells you there's something to learn from him. I try and be a more open minded and open ears sort of guy.

Re: Working with Camtasia - IMHO, a newbie that's just starting out is not very likely to spend money to learn how to use Camtasia, or even buy it. That's why there's CamStudio. Camtasia is not difficult to learn, and I feel it is more beneficial to learn how to use it on your own and create your own videos rather than pay someone. Besides, Camtasia has a whole 'Help' section in the program that walks you through anything you want to learn how to do for free.
Re: Best way to start a business? - I'd have to agree with christew. When I started my business I really didn't have a clue as to what I was getting into or what it would take to see it through. I had to learn the ins and outs while already running it. I think the best way to learn is to just get your feet wet... or dive right in. I'm definitely a "hands-on" learner, and there's no better time to learn than when you "have" to learn. If I wanted my website to become a success, I was going to have to learn, otherwise it would've failed. Granted I don't think this works for every business out there. This is more manageable when starting an online business, but I do think you need to do your research and learn before starting an offline business. There's a lot of money at stake and a lot more risk involved. In that sense, yes, an apprenticeship might be a viable option.
