Breaking News: Jobs Will Never Get Back To Normal!

With regard to jobs, more change is coming! The Competition is growing! Globalization is here! The world economy is bad and will get worse! Millions of lost jobs will not return! Much like the alarming words spread by Paul Revere on his legendary “midnight ride” this compelling message must be spread quickly so Americans can better cope – and win – in our changing workplace environment. However, just like the colonial militia, the workforce of today can soundly beat and turn back the forces that threaten our collective economic well-being. Going forward, the American worker can win and survive, only if they collectively understand the demands of the new workplace, and take decisive and appropriate action to attain the skills required to become a “knowledge worker.”

Rest assured… America is at a critical tipping point. The loss of high paying manufacturing jobs, now being followed by the outsourcing of technology jobs to other countries, must be understood by all Americans. This understanding must be followed by a very aggressive attempt to train, educate and re-skill millions of citizens so they are equipped with “new knowledge” to meet and beat the competition of a global economy.

Globalization however is not the only enemy. The enemy is also within. It is the enemy of complacency, of not taking seriously the need for the aggressive “meaningful” education and training that is required individually and collectively to beat the competition. The immediate and long-term collective investment we make in preparing our citizens for the workplace, will assure that our standard of living will at the very least remain competitive with the rest of the world. For you the individual, you must aggressively search for and obtain training in skilled knowledge based jobs which are in demand.

Building a workforce that can survive in the future will require both revolutionary and evolutionary thinking and action by “all sectors of our society.”

The reality is that we live and work in a global economy and we compete with many highly skilled global players. We must refocus our learning and education processes so they become value-added and strategic in nature. We can no longer simply cope and train in the same old way for the same old jobs. We must be out on the leading edge of creating an innovative workforce for the jobs of the future.

The global forces of competition are creating the need for individuals and organizations, public and private, to build the capability to respond rapidly to market demands. No individual about to enter the workplace or who is presently employed can afford to be unaware of the pace of change and the new demands being expected of today’s workforce. Individual initiative will be more important than ever.

Bottom line… The workplace will never get back to what it was in the recent past. For those who seek the comfort of the good old days, it will never be back to normal! Normal no longer exists!

So…Welcome to the new American workplace. It is, and will be, more turbulent, unpredictable, and interconnected than in any other time of human history. The structures of organizations are changing. This has resulted in out-sourcing, multi-disciplinary teams, individuals working from project to project, lack of clear functional identities, de-layering of positions, lack of predictable rises in income and… the absence of security and long term employment in one job.

Individuals who look for a job in virtually any sector will need to “think strategically” and “act tactically” as never before. A Very Important Point: The smartest and most savvy individuals will act and think like “independent contractors” moving from project to project and continually acquiring new and relevant skills.

Re: Kevin's Case Study #7 - How do you promote your new book? Re: Kevin's Case Study #7 - How do you promote your new book? - Hi Kevin, Normal conversion rate is 2% for me. High conversion rate can be 5-6% or more probably. But if you use Google Adwords techniques properly and have the good sales letter, then it can be 25-30% or more. It depends on books too. If it is exciting and shocking book with great sales letter then it will determine the rate of conversion, too. Orxan
Re: What If Steve Jobs Hadn't Returned To Apple In 1997? Re: What If Steve Jobs Hadn't Returned To Apple In 1997? - Thanks for sharing with us Yinko. Steve Jobs is definitely a visionary. Not only his products are innovative in a technological sense, but he's managed to turn a tech-company's products into a lifestyle.... a lifestyle!! [quote:zfqoq43n]Fast Forward to today. Apple has the sexiest products in the business: iMacs, Macbooks, iPhones, iPods and more.[/quote:zfqoq43n] I think not only tech would be different (music players and phones), but ways we can think of marketing and branding. What Steve Jobs did was of course no easy task for the smaller businesses, but he did start somewhere. What I did not know was that Apple is worth about as much as Google. How do you think Apple accomplish what they did? In terms of strategy wise? If you could advice Steve on one thing, what would it be?
Learning from other people's mistakes (Books) Learning from other people's mistakes (Books) - Most business books are written by people who tell of success stories, and how they were achieved. I'm wondering if people learn more by reading about the stories of failure? Or about how people achieved success...and then frittered it away through bad business practice. I checked two books out of the library yesterday. Apple: The Inside Story of Intrigue, Egomania, and Business Blunders, by Jim Carlton (started as a startup in 1976, sales peaked in 1995, and even then they were a "troubled" company, and now they've only got a 3% market share. (And I must admit I used to love Macs, but don't anymore...) and Breaking Windows: How Bill Gates Fumbled the Future of Microsoft, by David Bank. "Breaking Windows" tells the story of the battle for the soul of Microsoft that raged inside the company from 1997 to 2000 and continues to reverbrate today." The book "breaks new ground in its analysis of Microsoft's past and future business strategies. As Microsoft faces the waning importance of Windows, rallies behind XML, and confronts the open-source insurgency, the past Bank reveals is vital to understanding the future of this company and the still unfinished digital revolution it helped unleash.
Re: Are you getting an iPad 2? Re: Are you getting an iPad 2? - @GT - we can talk more about it once I get one and I'm happy to answer any questions to see if it might fit your lifestyle. @Yinka - Sorry, no payment from Steve Jobs... I wish!
