Eight Action Steps To Help You Live A More Fulfilling Personal And Professional Life
It is easy to remain fixated on the present
while remaining neglectful of the future. It is also easy to think that future
tense thinking is a nebulous concept and expending the effort to change your
mind-set is a waste of precious time. True, it is more comfortable to deal with
“what is” rather than grappling with “what may be.” I challenge you to stop and
think of this: Have you ever seen a successful business or organization that
was not actively thinking and planning its future? By taking full ownership of
your future thinking process, you are blending the present with the future.
This allows your day-to-day future thinking to become internalized as an
action-oriented thought process that prepares you to be the master of change,
rather than its victim. The following “Eight Step Program” can help you think
more effectively in future tense.
1.
Read
voraciously and then read some more. Stay informed especially about new
technology, discoveries in science and medicine, genetic engineering, diet and
healthcare, demographic trends, potential shortages both natural and human
made, and emerging, new, or what are referred to as “sunrise jobs of the future.”
2. Search
the Internet for information, but do not take information from just one source.
Your goal must be to obtain accurate and verifiable facts.
3. Continually
ask questions - be as inquisitive as a child. Also remember that the obvious
answer is often not the most correct answer. Inquire beyond the obvious. Continually
ask “why.”
4. Question
your beliefs. Always seek the truth. Do not just look for input that reinforces
your present thinking. Look through a different lens, searching for alternative
thinking on subjects while seeking a broad and varied knowledge base. This
approach can lead to new beliefs or reinforce your current beliefs with newly
discovered facts.
5. Analyze
the information you gather, looking for its implication on the future. This is
your opportunity to critically think for yourself. What does this information
tell you? What is happening? What are some possibilities? Does this information
show a trend? What possible impact could the information have on my future?
6. Continually
do scenario planning as information is gathered. Taking all the information you
obtain, try to determine what the worst, best and most likely scenario will be.
Will the new technology result in my job disappearing, an opportunity to learn
a new skill, or a transition to another department or another company?
7. Think
of continual transformation. Both wisdom and research affirm that you tend to
move toward and become most like that which you think about. When you think
about the future, you will learn about the future and be in a much better
position to be prepared for the future when it arrives.
8.
Conceive
of your role in life to be that of a futurist, a change agent. This approach
will allow your internal rate of change to stay with or ahead of the external
rate of change.
The best person to forecast your future is you.
Why? Because you can influence and change your future in ways that no one else
can. A glimpse of the future can be a powerful motivational tool. When you look
ahead, and decide what kind of future is desirable for you, then you can begin
making the right decisions today which will build your tomorrow! The ability to
see and create your personal future is the essence of empowering yourself to
take effective action toward living a more fulfilling, personal and professional
life.
