How To Get and Keep a Job

In the final analysis there are no "success secrets" to getting and keeping a job. However, there are success systems, success habits, and success principles which you can apply through attitude, brains and commitment.

Despite the book titles, magazine articles, and guru claims, there are no quick and easy ways to attain success. Most success is created through a positive attitude using your brain and thousands of hours of personal commitment to disciplined training, practice and action. We understand this in sports; why not apply it to your career?

Studies of Nobel Prize winners have shown that their intelligence levels are average; however, their attitude, use of whole brain thinking and their commitment to something greater than themselves, are well above normal. Successful people have simply formed the habits of doing well those things that most people don't want to do.

It's easy to live in the moment and let tomorrow take care of itself. It takes reflection, attitude, brains and commitment to determine your destiny. You will need to control the impulse of instant gratification and continually make investments in your future. Only you can make your future success happen.

Remember this very important point. Life-long-learning and all that it entails including higher education, e-learning, on-the-job training and certification, will be the key ingredients of your success. Knowledge, which can be applied, is the currency of the 21st Century workplace.
From a very practical standpoint, to get and keep a job, consider applying the following eight points on a continual basis.

1. Be a self-starter.

2. Have and continually develop your computer/technology skills.

3. Network actively with people throughout your chosen occupation and profession.

4. Forget the traditional career ladder and seek work that you are passionate about.

5. Make the best use of your innate talents, competencies and strengths.

6. Become a generalist, but with some specific sought after skills.

7. Work well with others connected to the organization, both internally and externally, both colleague and customer.

8. Like a sport professional, keep practicing and honing your competitive edge.

When you apply for a job you will have many of the same credentials as others who apply. The attribute that will make you stand out will be your ability to demonstrate that you can learn to do new work in changing situations.

This final point cannot be over emphasized…Your future success in the workplace belongs to those who have “learned how to learn” to those who have developed a solid set of workplace “core competency skills” are “self-reliant” and to those who are committed to “curiosity,” “personal responsibility” and “life-long learning” and… “Work well with others.”
