Role of the Supervisor – Be There for Those You Supervise!

The ultimate litmus test of successful supervisor is the supervisor’s ability to translate the intention of the organization into reality and then sustain it and make it grow through continual engagement of all stakeholders. The role of a true supervisor in this effort is to develop strategy, provide a vision, set direction, define the right outcomes, select the best talent, and then be there to enable those you supervise to realize their full potential. To that end, as a supervisor you should:

· Define your supervisory role as a “coach of human potential.”

· Assess and enhance your supervisory strengths and competencies continually, as well as the strengths and competencies of those they lead.

· Create and sustain a positive and disciplined corporate culture through example that is reinforced within a supportive work environment.

· Develop a strong vision and then set direction through a defined strategy.

· Communicate, consistently and often, the skills and perceptions that are most important and desired for their employees’ success in a great organization.

· Insist on a disciplined approach to business processes and business outcomes.

· Encourage, support and allow all employees to be creative and apply their talents toward the innovative implementation of new products and services.

· Create synergy throughout the organization/department so that, together, all stakeholders can have a greater total effect than the sum of their individual effort.

· Communicate the importance of the customer constantly.

· Provide consistent measurement and effective feedback.

· Constantly listen for feed back from those you lead so you can improve your supervisory skills and effectiveness.

· Be constantly engaged with those you lead

In attempting to realize high-performance goals and transformational change, as well as create higher levels of performance, you the supervisor must constantly seek new ways of engaging the hearts and minds of all of your employees. You must force decision making that is aligned with the overall strategy and objectives of the organization, to encompass all the people you supervise.

As their supervisor you must align the thousands of small, individual, daily decisions made by your employees so they become part of the collective, synergistic big picture. This will require an enhanced style of supervision — a supervisory style that is comfortable with anxiety, deals with disruption, and can transform for tomorrow while doing business today. It will necessitate a supervisory style that requires you to acquire, train, coach, and keep only the very best people, while leading them to an agreed upon vision of the future. You must constantly be there for them, helping them to be all that they can be.
